In most cities you also need to be able to afford private school and the public transportation options are not as dense as NYC. A city like NYC is in a completely different echelon from nearly every other medium/large city in the US.

Seattle weather is terrible compared to the south bay area/silicon valley, but it is comparably terrible to San Francisco proper.

I am also at Amazon currently. You are right, its not as frugal as in the past but it is still significantly more frugal than an environment like Google or similar startups/unicorns that go for that. I have interviewed people who are h

I think this is a key problem for google. I am not sure there are many who believe that the Google R&D/moonshots are actually going to turn into businesses or executed products for Google sold by Google. Their "heart" nev

as a thought experiment, Amazon is basically the opposite of the google culture in this perspective (door desks, soda/food is not subsidized, equipment is just barely enough, etc). now, this leads to lots of complaints from a subset of

It all started with the warehouse worker complaints, which were general complaints that any warehouse worker will have and not really egregious comparatively. This fed into a media narrative and causes sites like that to pop up. When startu

It is a marketing material, not an article. Very thin on details with every point somehow being in GCE's favor? There is nothing AWS does better or they liked better?

It can be. I pay about $400/month for family covergage, this is unusually high for a tech job (many of which have little or no monthly from the employee). So still only $4800 of what might be many tens of thousands of dollars extra. Ev

You are right. Seattle is the bay area for people who have kids they want in good schools and to have a decent upper middle class lifestyle with cars/large house/lawn. With that comes risk adverse big-tech-co jobs that pay high bu

"enterprises" that want to "leverage cloud" is where all of the money is. AWS is chasing that dragon too. There is way more money selling cloud stuff to Coca-Cola and GE than to software companies.
