One of the limit is reliability. Robot don’t self maintain... The more elaborate the task, the more complicated the maintenance to ensure acceptable failure rate. At some point you spend as much time fixing as doing the job. Especially in c

I thought I was original then I read "Cathedral and the Bazaar". Anyway: martial arts and playing music are two common activities for hackers in needs of disengaging. These activities offer a complete range of possibilities, so wh

Me too. I worked on some good projects there a few years ago and now this. Is there somewhere a “for dummies” analysis / explanation of the chain of events and decisions that led to the current situation in Venezuela? I can’t fathom ho

I believe this technology should be put under control because it is not only a tool of mass control, but also a discriminatory tool. I gave example of this trend taking a personal example. Having to choose to go to a different theater becau

I will try to convey what only disabled people can convey to the best of my abilities. First, with one image you lose a lot of luminosity with the glasses on. Without the glasses, off course, it is unwatchable. Furthermore, and more subtle,

I understand what you mean. I should have explained that my temper flares when 3D is the only option offered, or when the 2D option is given at impossible hours.

There is another problem with such technology that is missing from this long article. Facial recognition et al. also excludes those with physical disabilities. For example, some people have facial injuries that make it impossible and/o

- What is your message? You do this talk for a reason, it must be extremely clear to you what it is, in a short sentence or two. - Storytelling. Humans engage in stories. Prepare yours. - Rehearse. Rehearse. Rehearse. And when you are done,

... Which begs the question: what good is an ORM if it does not prevent by design such issues? Here, we are essentially saying users of ORM must also have in their mind the SQL version. Or call an expert after the mess is done :/...

I don’t think it is vastly different in terms of program structure. They lost variable names and maybe some optimized intermediary calculations, but functional calls and branches are usually preserved through decomp (unless some compiler op

What I like about this code is how much direct it is. No fancy abstraction. Brutally to the point with switch() and if() and that’s it!

Yes. I am involved in one privately funded metro project where the civil work contractor in charge of building the stations just went under. So, they rebid, and in the meantime other part of the project like mine have to standby :b

This is not as unusual as you may think. Examples abound in such mega projects where a major civil works contractor default and another one walks in to pick up the mess. In addition, the path of the tunnel will be decided in details and sub

Thanks for the link, though depressing to read. (1) So much for driverless cars, I guess. (2) I guess a study is needed when aerospace and rail has, oh, 50+ years or so of cumulated data about the problem. MIT or not, these people seem pret

You are not conscious of this, but your car certifications, the driving rules and the road design constraints precisely achieved that, after now nearly 100 years of continuous trial and error. And it will not stop.

Further to your point, missing a few seconds due to this will reduce capacity but will not create delays, since this time will be factored in the timetables with a margin. Disclaimer: I realize such studies :O)
