Ouch... I was busting my ass karma-whoring here. Now I fail to see the point of it all.

Ask HN: how much karma do I need before I can downmod stories?

Isn't this lack of verbal nuance exactly why Putin could misconstrue an offering of "help" as an offering of humanitarian "aid" to poor computer-illiterate Russia?

When things get translated, they can acquire unexpected meanings. In English even, consider "help" vs "aid".

I know some people with a lot of "passion for technology" (Linux, Mac, iPhones) who are essentially idiots. Luckily, the only programming languages they barely know are Bash and the like, so they can't do much damage. Ass-kissing keeps them

Speaking of perfectionism, look at my karma! (but don't upmod or downmod me, or you'll ruin it)

I'm going and looking forward to meeting everyone who's worked on SBCL there. What an excellent system!

It was interesting when I saw if for the first time. How is this Hacker News (serious question)? I'm trying to understand what's supposed to be on- and off-topic, so I can flag/post accordingly.

Interesting read, but I have my reservations about laziness as default, and the apparent lack of shipped Haskell applications, despite the language's popularity and age, seems to confirm those reservations.

Windows Media Encoder, then upload wmv to blip.tv, who convert it to flash and host it (Got this idea from the Clojure guy) Not sure why the other Windows Media Encoder user got downmodded. Perhaps it would be more useful to explain why you

I think it's art and open to interpretation. To me, "--omgwftbbq" hints at the bazaar development, leading to inconsistency and unbridled enthusiasm about some features.

In one of the video lectures the author of Clojure seemed to claim that Clojure is as fast as Java. IME though that's not quite the case.

I used CMUCL a bit, and SBCL almost never. Does SBCL really deliver on what it set out to do? Is it better, faster, more portable? As far as I know, the Windows port never matured. Which of the two do people recommend using?

To reward or not to reward is a tough dilemma. That's why I would just give him a certificate "A donation has been made in your name to the Human Fund". This way, there is no jealousy from the coworkers. One's contributions are appreciated

They must be very good, if they are expected to come up with something within a few months that will be able to compete with Google Docs, Microsoft Office and Open Office. I can't wait to see it.

If you are paying $1000 (with roommates) to $2000 (1BR or studio) in rent, saving a few bucks by changing your diet won't make much difference. By the way, aren't programmers in hedge funds supposed to make $200k-$500k a year after bonuses
