What the FreeBSD ISO size comparison overlooks is that to provide 32 bit application compatibility FreeBSD/amd64 will include a i386 copy of all libraries (unless deselected).

Yes and no. A lot of it depends on how the low fan-out tree is laid out in memory. Also some binary tree structures (e.g. binary heaps) are often stored in an array with one child implied and only the other child index stored in each node.

I would love to see the streaming providers cry should the handful relevant ISPs decide on collective action and block all sports streaming services because obviously allowing sports streaming is a giant liability. /s

As long as your puny little working set (2^16 small keys) fits into L2 cache and get is perfectly covered by the L1 dTLB you won't see the cost of touching random pages in a big hash table larger than the last level TLB coverage and on

It shouldn't be expected of parents to work while providing active childcare. Both the parents and children deserve better than "Shush! Mommy is on a call." (at the kitchen table).

One empty C-suite office wastes less square feet of commercial real estate than an empty cubicle farm (unless the organisation is even more broken). Plus the C-suite isn't just stealing time (back) from the company to care for a sick k

Doesn't userspace have access to the full ISA in the x32 ABI and the page tables are just configured to wrap at 32 bits?

Neither do I, but I can tell you if you manage to bend a normal CPU die the performance loss is 100% (because you broke it).

I've found that s6 and s6-rc are correct to a fault. It works as documented, but you can't take shortcuts like you can with other init systems that don't have a validating compiler compilation step.

Yes clang used bootstrap in a similar time to its contemporary GCC version and compile code notably faster at the cost of emitting slightly less optimised code. Over the years LLVM became bloated. It's now by far the biggest and slowes

FreeBSD has always been able to self-host (build the itself from source) with just whats available in the FreeBSD src repository. To do this it needs a toolchain that includes among other things a linker, an assembler, and a C and C++ compi

I'm using package base on FreeBSD 14.0 and 14.1. Upgrading the system worked as expected. FreeBSD already has a documented official way to deal with ABI breakages. You're supposed to install the new kernel only, reboot, install re

See the TL;DR available in the last paragraph. Historically a (Free-)BSD operating system is a single repository of source code that is self-hosting (kernel and userland including compilers). Commercial UNIX vendors loved to double dip by w

The ISA can massively impact performance on relevant real-world workloads, but the divide isn't along the mythical RISC vs. CISC divide. Take H.264 encoding as a contrived example and try it with different x86 ISA levels (e.g. no SIMD
