It was called "the WordStar effect" in the 80s. Your marginal loss to pirates is nothing compared to the incremental effect of becoming a standard. Not always effective for all applications though.

If architects were builders, you would see many more utilitarian designs. They just don’t have the same goals, and neither (typically) do software engineers vs UI designers.

I think there's a jurisdictional issue for Austria to get Cloudflare to do anything at all. So the court says "fine, just block Cloudflare's servers at all Austrian ISPs. Perhaps that will get their attention." See, Clo

Other than the grand moral dilemma of Cloudflare hosting (protecting) DDoS-for-hire sites, and deliberately ignoring requests to stop.

To further my question: I have a c/c I use for Google. Said card # is stolen, and used to buy Google services (under a different ID). I call the bank, they cancel the card and refund the amounts charged to Google for the unknown serv

TIL never to buy physical products directly from Google! Or for that matter to never use Google Pay, even if the c/c charge isn't run by them. You could go from "credit card buyer protection" to Google Doomsday with a s

Ha, they'll probably get credited by the FBI for assisting in the investigation, as they did last time. Cloudflare gets the low-integrity prize.

You might want to look into using Cloudflare for your infrastructure - the same folks that provided DDoS protection for most of the now-busted Ddos-for-hire sites!

I use it on some self-hosted domains (all IMAP) but have used it with Migadu, MXroute, and others. I generally like it more than FairMail (simpler, fewer options that I seemed to need to set). But I have tried to sell it to other Android u

I’d like to see the results for just California, where EV adoption is highest. What has happened to gasoline use in the state where 18% of new car sales are EVs?

Not sure WFMU really counts as college radio any more (used to be associated with Upsala college) but it’s free-form, listener-supported radio that is very influential in the NYC area. Anyway, add it or don’t, but give it a listen!

I understand the first part -- sending requests with no host header to a spam log (or even better, don't log). What I don't understand is the second part -- blocking those hosts. Seems pointless now that you've de-noised you

Somebody has to do the Monty Python quote. To play the flute, you just blow in this end, and move your fingers up and down on this end. In the 70s, people thought of programmers as typists.

It has to do with tracking the levels in the group. You want to be able to slide a master level up and down and have the levels maintain the "same" balance, even if one of the players ends up going to (effectively) zero level when

FWIW, most of the patent war was about how Sonos syncs the volume controls so that changing a master volume level changes all the synced volumes. Seems obvious (and therefore unpatentable) but there is an ever-so-slightly-not-quite-obviou

Indeed, it’s the magic that made PayPal what it is today. Back when it was x.com, they were trying to figure out how to avoid being a bank, and they did it with something that violated credit card merchant agreements: by crediting accounts

I think it's two things: the power of malice, and popularity measurement. Malice and fame. Social networks are devices for measuring popularity; if you took the up/down arrows off, no one would be interested in playing. And we h

I think because 100% of Google Voice numbers are forwarding numbers, and 2fa folks feel like that is a risk factor. I really don’t know, but I do know it’s trending that way for GV, specifically.

If they simply truncated the string on input, why wouldn’t your password work every time?
