Wait - what did it take to get 18.04.2 server running? Is there an SD image that works?

The DNS only provides one upside: memorable names. But there aren't enough downsides to ever be more important than this one feature, or you would just be telling people IP addresses already.

Probably too late to keep this discussion going, but... I understand Proof of Stake vs. Proof of Work. But what Ben says about only "publishing the current state of the ledger" doesn't seem to relate to whether PoS is used. I

Forgive my stupidity, but I don't understand this statement by Ben (Stratechery): "In practice, it is much more complicated: while a limited set of “validators” — aka miners — share a history of transactions in (individual) blocks

Check out the customers of planet.com, the satellite-photography company. Many are hedge funds that gamble on prices based on identifying shipping traffic.

I like Sirius, or at least 3 or 4 stations. Enough to make the fees palatable. What's almost UNpalatable is the audio quality: my Audi has the Sirius decoder, and it's notably awful. 17-32k stream according to Wikipedia. I guess s

Agreed, and it was more or less the response I was looking for a couple of days ago. We'll be staying with DO. We already use other VPS services as backup, and will probably add one or two more. But because of their well-documented res

Still waiting for response 22 hours in. The response (and its timing) will determine whether we continue with DO as a host for the (admittedly tiny) bit of infrastructure we host there. And there had better be a reasonable response on HN if

Can you tell from the command line what version Pi you're running? I think mine's an original B+, but not sure. I typically get sub-millisecond DNS resolution (presumably from cache). >root@pihole:~# uptime > 17:02:51 up 5

Curious about anyone's experience with adblock for OpenWRT. I use Pi-hole now, and it works great. The one feature that I use quite a lot is the ability to disable it for a short period of time -- when I'm shopping for something,

This is my experience as well. Suddenly logins take 30s. Why? Some new systemd problem with reverse DNS. Suddenly reboots don't happen. Why? Systemd is spinning on a task that didn't used to spin. Yes, probably fixable, but not di

Yes they should, and others too (see my GP response above). Anonymity, such as it was, helped prevent risk. Now we need a law to limit the liability of a donor. Are there already such laws?

I think the risk is that donations in general are at risk because of the removal of anonymity. Why would anyone donate if it means taking on indeterminate risk?

Why couldn't the mysql_ library just have added prepared queries? I've never understood this (not a PHP programmer, just someone who has had to patch a dozen sites that were suddenly broken once).

Yes, this. Except sometimes, like when Comcast looks at your DMARC policy that specifically says "p=none" and decides that means "reject all mail from this domain". Gotta love those guys. Edit: s/spf/DMARC
