Yes, at least in medical settings, I think it's just as much about accountability and CYA than actually improving overall real-world security. If that person's action results in a leak than they can be personally sued and fined.

Thanks, it does sound like things have changed. I probably would have been a better hire back then than today though. I was younger, cheaper, and had an almost OCD drive to learn everything CS since I had a complex about getting into the

pumping melted, probably saline water over ice doesn't seem like a great way to refreeze the water, more like a good way to melt more ice.

By my quick calculation, one meter of sea rise would be ~100,000 cubic miles of water. The great lakes hold ~5,500. So no, probably not.

My Google interview in 2008, one guy asked me to write a binary tree structure and implementations of depth and breadth-first search (maybe also balanced insert?) on the whiteboard in C, which I blew through in no time. He then immediately

I wonder about this too. If you are new to CA, at first it seems crazy how aggressive people are about splitting the right hand lane to turn right... who would have the right of way if the bus was already stopped at a light, but the AV spl

How are the two related exactly? Is XtreemFS part of the core of the Quobyte product, or is it a dead-end, with all new development happening in Quobyte?

I will say that I know two people that have independently tried fairly large trials (400TB+) of Lustre, GlusterFS, and BeeGFS, and BeeGFS was their eventual favorite.

It's not entirely clear cut, but IMO apple was also in the right when it came to the ebook price fixing.

based on another comment. I forgot to add that I always had an odd number of servers in the GlusterFS cluster to help with consensus, even if that server did not actually hold any data bricks.

My experience was not as bad as yours, but the problems I saw at a similarly small scale (6 servers, 3 2X replica sets) make me glad I'm not having to scale up a GlusterFS infrastructure. The biggest problem I saw was with absolutely

I can only say that you get what you pay for, private vs. public non-withstanding. I don't put it past any private company to put in an unrealistically low bid, and hope for one of three exit strategies (based on what I've seen i

That's a really good point. I guess we'll see if Europe has its own infrastructure problems in 50 years or so when some of that "new" WWII infrastructure starts to get old. I would say, though, that not all parts of Eu

I think a major factor is that the US hasn't been around for very long and we're coming to a point where a lot of infrastructure is coming under need of repair or replacement simultaneously. In particular instances, this infrastr

The proposed mechanism involving transposons in GM mosquitoes is very convoluted (imo highly unlikely). It is also a red herring, the real question is whether the virus is the cause, and what the mechanism is.

The Fed is nominally independent of the government. Ideally they should be working together with the government providing more stimulus and jobs to bridge an economic slump (also doing something about student loans, as you mentioned). Unfo

I'm not an expert, but the method used really depends on the type of tree. I have faster growing tree that I shape by exploiting how it redirects growth when trimmed.

Of course it depends on location and timing, but I sold my last home of 6 years and walked away with 180k. Discounting what we paid in mortgage over that time we probably only netted like 40k or so... but compared to the hassle and cost it

Just how bad is this "permanent" performance hit? Do you have numbers? I've seen pools that have climbed above 90%, and maybe they've suffered permanent speed degradation, but they still run fast enough to mostly satura

conda is quite good. It makes a strong case to be a good general (not just Python) package manager. In particular I think the way it tries to make compiled binaries relocatable is very useful (and clever).
