Hmm... Anyone seen the show "Continuum"? You should. It's on Netflix. And would instantly raise some red flags for this.

It's completely mental (not as in crazy, as in it's a mental issue). I like to keep things tidy, if something is in my inbox then it's something that needs to be dealt with.

First, volumes are 100% separated from containers. If you remove a container, the volumes are not removed unless you explicitly told docker to (docker rm -v <container>). And even then, it won't remove the volume if other contai

I'd be interested to know what your concerns are with volumes.

So, we're making volumes better! Please see: https://github.com/docker/docker/pull/8484 And that is only the beginning. It may be presumptuous to say the referenced PR will be in 1.4, but that's cer

To be honest, I'm very much against this approach to containerized development. The project should have a single Dockerfile from which dev/test/staging/production work from. There are certaily things you may want to chan

boot2docker is a tiny Linux distro and does not require any specific virtualization tool, or even virtualization at all. For the sake of simplicity and distribution the OSX and Windows installers package boot2docker with Virtualbox.

Well sure there can be a guarantee. `RUN apt-get install some_package=<version>` If you want a newer version, update the Dockerfile with the version you want.

It's not that a container can't run multiple processes, but Docker will itself only start one process. If you use, for instance, Apache with the forking MPM, this will work as expected (it'll work). If you want to start multi

No, you will not be able to deploy a Linux app onto a Windows container, or vice-versa. Containers share a kernel, this would make it impossible. However, with things like boot2docker (25MB Linux distro), this makes it really leight-weight&

If by namespace you mean user namespaces, no. Unfortunately golang has made this difficult... fortunately the fantastic folks on the Golang team have graciously added in the support we needed for Go 1.4 even though it's in feature free

Well, the volume bug fixes are fixing things with the volumes re-write which hasn't yet hit a release (which also adds no public functionality at this point) .

FWIW, now that docker is handling the restart/monitoring it can actually do it better than if systemd is doing it, since docker knows that it doesn't have to tear down and re-create the network namespace, unmount/remount the

The cgroups and namespaces do indeed provide a layer of security. We also drop certain capabilties, so for instance root inside the container can't (by default) manipulate iptables, mount things, change network settings, etc. To come l

You could already do these things outside of dockerland via the host-integration stuff (ie, systemd to handle restarts/monitoring). 1.0 was/is about API stability, engine stability, full ecosystem with Docker Hub, and enterprise s

I don't think you are understanding what docker is doing. Docker interfaces with the kernel to provide security and isolation via cgroups and namespaces. This is exactly what jails does, and is indeed on the list of things to be added

Did you know you can have containers share a network namespace, so effectively containers can have the same localhost?
