It's a little misleading to say bug fixes only--they're introducing a bunch of new core technologies (can't say anything else, since it's all under NDA). And focussing on performance is a great idea--when has any company ever had the backbo

Pretty fun, but pretty fluffy, too. I have fond memories of working right next to the Harvard CRCT (Center for Research in Computing Technologies, whose building has been replaced by the Gates/Ballmer "cheese wedge") IMP late at night, and

I found the 30" cinema display too large for comfort, for some odd reason. Now I use a 24" iMac with a secondary 23" cinema display to the left. Perfect for me.

The clue is probably in the 700-1000 machine interaction. If they have to display 200% more results (10 vs 30), they're probably interacting with a lot more machines in their cloud.

I'd say get your own dedicated host with your own IP address, and use normal outgoing mail. (I use a colocated Xserve G5 with Postfix, which is a great system.) As long as your SMTP server is reasonably secure (you can run simple blacklist

MacBook Air, no question. It's fast enough. I came to this conclusion unexpectedly, having lived with a couple of generations of MBP 17", and, tiring of slow laptop drives, got a latest-generation 24" iMac a few weeks ago. (Which is a great

I'm pretty sure they've worked out deals with each of the target sites and have access to some private APIs. Probably this only works if you can convince them you're going to send serious business their way.

http://www.varasoftware.com/products/screenflow/ seems to be the best tool for the Mac right now, at least according to all the big boys. It has features that few or none of the other solutions seem to have. E.g., the ability to record th

Also, Symbolics, LMI and TI all faced the big problem that their machines were in the $100K range, which was too much except for well-funded ARPA projects or big-company research groups. (E.g., I was one of the original system hackers at th

Here's a good overview from one of the Symbolics folks, DLW (Dan Weinreb): http://dlweinreb.wordpress.com/category/symbolics/ .

Exactly. I was at school with Gates (used to see him hunched over the PDP-10 TTYs late at night writing his Basic), and we all used the ARPAnet for mail, ftp, etc (though it was pretty new in '73), but we didn't think it was anything that w

Yes, definitely just use the built-in Emacs from the command line. Less flash & less Mac integration, but it works the same whether running on your system or running ssh'd into a Unix-based server. (But be sure to (10.5) use "Preference

I don't think RPG (Dick Gabriel) had anything to do with the actual Symbolics corporation, other than perhaps cheerleading from a distance. (I was working at MIT at the time, using the original AI Lab LispMs. Loads of fun.)

It really depends on what you mean by "school." There's an almost incomparable qualitative difference between Stanford (or Harvard, my alma mater) and your local community college, if you're talking about a CS degree. But college these days

No question that PGW was the greatest prose stylist of the 20th century. Makes sense, from his biography: every morning, 6 days a week, year after year for decades, he would sit down and churn out some 10-20-30 pages of new or edited prose,
