This reminds me (uh-oh, another neckbeard old-timer story) of the very early days of the ARPAnet when there about 20 nodes or so... Back then there were free guest accounts on all the systems (mostly TOPS-10 and TENEX systems along with som

Boy, that brought back happy memories! I was running the MIT-EECS department computing machinery back when Symbolics and LMI (Lisp Machines, Inc--Greenblatt's competitor) were just getting going, and we had around 8 or 10 of the original Li

Bob was my best buddy freshman year. He's a great fellow, though I've lost track of him lately. He left Microsoft because he was never able to break into the tight "inner circle" of Gates, Ballmer and Allen, even though he was classmates of

I'm sorry, but this is laughable. Do people put icons in their iOS apps advertising the use of CoreAnimation? Do they put some kind of Silverlight or Flash badge on their web sites done with those technologies? It's just a set of useful tec

Yes, it's certainly well-targeted, and we used their demographic targeting to the ultimate degree. It still didn't do us any good. Do you have any sense that people saw and acted on your ads?

As one of the sibling responses points out, it's not a Ponzi scheme. But it's certainly a completely useless advertising medium, from my limited experience with them for a few months. We spent hundreds of dollars of advertising on an iPhone

The sad fact is that Apple will never be the same after Jobs. I think he embodies a unique ability to see the heart of a new technology or aspect of technology and to focus in on the critical part or parts, ruthlessly getting to what he see

Remember, Facebook, like Google, doesn't have to get its data operations 100% correct. A very low-level failure rate (such as this kind of spurious message) is acceptable to them.

Doesn't this just reflect the dirty little secret that Google doesn't really have to get any particular details right, just mostly right most of the time?

This article whitewashes the issue by first pointing out the problem, and then making some vague hand-wavy claim that Google is providing direct answers immediately that obviate further search. This is nonsense. I think the whole world know

The US should act more like Israel: accept that acts of terrorism will happen, don't publicize it, just clean it up and quietly go after the bad guys. And, most of all, don't act terrified--just go about business as usual.

This actually makes some sense (if I understand it correctly), vs. a VNC client solution in a browser. You can, in theory, use the higher-level hints given at the toolkit level to optimize the bits sent for each toolkit API invocation.
