I can remember at least 9 different cities that have been called "the startup capital of Europe".

There is nothing in Europe that can compete with Silicon Valley, but the closest ones would be London and Berlin. London feels a bit more corporate, while Berlin seems younger and wilder.

This essentially ignores the condition of the US (and in particular the Bay area) as the tech capital of the world. The US is not bereft of talent, but the US alone does not produce enough tech talent to sustain its position in the world. I

I know someone in a similar, but slightly different situation. He worked for a European-based SaaS company; an American competitor offered him a job in the Bay. When he didn't win the lottery, they had him working in Dublin for a year,

That's the issue: he calls them tomorrow's languages, implying that they need to change ("can you marry modern thinking, build a community [...]) before getting there, or being "today's languages". So far, I st

I agree with some of the issues that the author points in Rails; but, at the same time, he is unable to name what is "today's software" using his words. Until then, I will stay with Rails. Until then. Moreover, the author see

I agree with your comment, particularly with the fact that HDI is a good index for monitoring the "richness" of a country. However, the parent comment was about Brazil being a 3rd world country, not only "poor" by US sta

As an immigrant in Denmark, I can confirm. After a while here, Trump sounds like a clown with centrist political views on immigration.

Well, the cost of living does not matter to the company; the issue for them are the salaries. According this[1], the average salary for a software developer in Shanghai is 150k RMB. That's like 30.5k Canadian dollars. The average salar

Yes, but even if Canada has a really big pool of talented developers for its size, the base problem is Canada's population size. According this ranking ( http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/universit.

EU is a clear example. And then you have China and India, that have a smaller percentage of educated people, but have such a big populations that their elites can be excellent. The issue with Canada is that it's pretty small, populatio

What is there for these companies in Canada? It seems a better idea to open development offices in other countries, that might be cheaper and have a bigger talent pool.

Good comment. Just a clarification: there is no path to the Green Card from L1B. There is a path from L1A, but I would guess they are a minority of the L1 visas. So yes, H1 seems to be the one and only skilled immigration program.

You are supposing that an American company needs to have been founded in the US. That's not true. There are many tech companies, including 1B+ ones, that were founded out of the US and then moved there. The availability of capital is s

I don't think renting is better in CPH than in Stockholm. Right now I'm paying 10.000DKK (1500USD) for a one bedroom apartment, not in the center (NV). It was the only option that didn't involve any shady stuff like no-contra

Sad. I am the CEO of a social game with pretty big traction but with a pretty low user lifetime value (lower than in your example). With you I thought I could have a good analytics service at last. Not anymore.
