Quarantine != "barred". Perhaps inconvenient to the point of rethinking the trip, yes, but that's different than a citizen being denied the right of return by their government. And even that inconvenience can be removed with

I can see a weird sort of logic to Apple. Why would they share their judgement about the level of an ex-employee with a potential rival company (rival in case of talent perhaps also product)? Let the employee say "I was Level 5 @ Apple

One of the things I struggle with in the perennial conversations about technical debt at startups is how to account for the fact that the future in not known with certainty: i.e. circumstances can change that render very good and 'wort

Re: "not plain English" - YC is BY FAR the most transparent and founder-friendly VC seed investor and goes to great lengths to educate founders. This is as clear language as financings get in startup land. If you're unwilling

There are many reasons - (1) the halo effect for future rounds of funding, not to mention Demo Day itself; (2) access to absolute god-tier advisors in areas that even though you're not a first-timer, you may not have experience with (e

Spot on, nothing to add to this. "Make something people want" is the #1 fundraising hack. If you do it well enough, fundraising isn't an issue.

One note of caution. As someone who gets a lot of these kinds of update emails, it's also very apparent when or when not a company is hitting an inflection point. Why does that matter? If things are going well, great - you'll have

I’m “into coffee” but not very knowledgeable about the history, so take this with a grain of salt. But I wonder if “the fourth wave” is actually already here and it’s primarily differentiated by brewing cafe quality coffee at home. It seems

As trite as it sounds, "Success = Hard Work + Opportunity" is still the default equation that makes the most sense to me. And while people from all strata of life work very hard, opportunities are obviously and incredibly unequall

Thought-provoking article and interesting story in of itself. I can't help but think that this is just a VC-funded version of traditional media, where the # of "sufficiently talented" people (i.e the supply) vastly outstrips

Disagree. The reason that logic works with thieves is that the thieves have limited time and resources, and both high risk and high opportunity cost. In this metaphor, if Thief #1 can't do it, he hands it over to a "bank" of

Makes sense! Chalk it up to ignorance on the sector in general, when I think "ships and startups" I think Flexport. I bet a lot of VCs will too (which is great - they are absolutely stellar). Best of luck!

Congrats on the launch! Wondering how much overlap you have with Flexport, which I've followed with great admiration through the years. Definitely seems like a sector in major need of continued modernization.

I’d say it really depends on WHY you want feedback. And perhaps who you are / what the code is doing for you (fun side project to build your skills vs MVP of your new funded startup). If it’s just to improve your craft, I’d say there a

The bad stuff is just a consequence of loving someone in a very deep way. I don't think I can define the "value of love" beyond saying that the upside is fairly basic stuff - fulfillment, joy, affection, pride, self-discovery

Great point. YC's model allowed them to do seed investing at scale, but the classic way is likely difficult to do well even if you're great at picking companies.
