Back in 2003 I tried introducing many of these techniques to our customers to look at their data in new ways. No one, not even the phd's among them had a clue how to use the visualizations. We investigated and found that very few people eve

I'm trained with the school of thought that says "Everything before the but is ..." you can guess the rest. Read your comment with that in mind :) I really like the voting - it's good to know when you have said something stupid. Either ever

I propose an experiment rather than making an assumption that it's not important. Randomly change the username on new posts from users that have a low average points per post (ppp)to a top 20 user in terms of ppp. If there is no effect of u

Dismissing experimentally validated research out of hand because you personally don't want it to be true is not critical thinking, it's wishful thinking.

There are many papers in psychology dealing with the influence of prestige on statement credibility. It does have a large effect and is replicated across many studies. Whether or not you want your prestige to influence your statement credib

I would rather have bias against my ideas because I am anonymous compared to bias for my ideas because of my accomplishments. It depends if you want to let other accomplishments add weight to your argument, or let your argument stand on it'

Certainly it was easy for firefox to grow fast as netscape had died and ie, well, it's ie. They were right time right place. For chrome to come along and take a large fraction of firefox users is an entirely different situation. If your c

Do note, python has much better support for a huge variety of modelling techniques. I looked at incanter and it's obvious that it's in it's infancy c.f. R or numpy/scipy and associated libraries. At the moment my vote would be for python or

Jumping to conclusions about the quality of research when you have not seen said research is in my opinion a non-scientific approach incorporating personal bias. A better statement you could make would be "I would like to see the methodolog

Honestly, read your post and try to apply basic scientific tenets to it. I see examples of bias, rejection of results without justification (peer reviewed support), misidentification of a report to the public as a scientific paper, a claim

Color me skeptical of fattening cows via water. Got any references? I'm guessing you mean simply storing more water with every gram of glucose in the muscle rather than fattening.

How does the lack of a citation in a laymans article suggest much better research is needed on this issue? You are arguing that "Perhaps that was a very unrepresentative group of gifted students and this result will never be replicated". We
