I think this is the crux of it. When i got my first job I probably made half the salary of the senior engineer in our division. I am 100% sure I was not half as productive. Juniors take a lot of training and time and aren't very produc

The xenaphobia is still very much there. Chinese tech is sanitized through Taiwanese middlemen (Foxconn, Asus, Acer etc). If you try to use Chinese tech or funding directly you will have a lot of pushback from VCs, financial institutions an

The author‘s reasons seem sensible ( https://eldred.fr/blog/codeberg/ ) But I'm sort of disappointed the end result doesn't seem like it's any better for users? (not blaming the author) The benefits f

I think the article underplays the transition. They're not just-now being sold, it's already the norm. I was in Chengdu last summer and all the huge trucks hauling sand and rocks at construction sites where electric already (and n

My impression is that b/c they're non-EU they've retained a lot more local talent. By contrast, any half decent programmer in Croatia has a very strong incentive to get a job in Germany and make a much higher salary

I think it's a broader cultural issue where everyone has to have strong opinions about everything and make a strong stand - instead of picking your battles Not that I necessarily disagree with their reasoning, but stick to having stron

I mean.. if Netflix offered Disney more money then they wouldn't have felt it necessary to launch their own service. I think they simply underpayed or overplayed their cards. It's hard to imagine Disney with it's own service

Do they hold the CERN Roomba to the same standard? If it cleans the same section of carpet twice is someone going to have to do a review?

yeah but is foveated streaming and whatnot going to be opensource, or are we going to have to wait a decade for some grad student to reimplement a half broken version?

I'm confused. Why would you develop a game on a SBC (that's not powerful enough to do VR)? Why are you not just cross compiling? It's possible that you can have a full open source stack some day on these goggles.. but I don&#

It sounds like the author started off by telling them they're doing illegal stuff. It's unclear if it's actually illegal or not.. but they naturally got the other side defensive and tried to avoid the author If instead they f

from a cursory look . it seems SteamVR is intended to be used with their DRM platform and isn't open source. Maybe its a bit less limiting vs Meta's offering? i wouldnt characterize this as an "open ecosystem" though

that doesn't in any way mean you can install an alternate OS. But i get your point that at least you can run Arch stuff. Isnt Arch ARM support unofficial? (its been ages since i tried) You dont hear of people running it on RPis for exa

sorry, maybe i missed it. But how do you know the ecosystem is open? from the link we don't know if the OS can be changed (might be locked like many Android phones) or if a connected machine is required to run their DRM/Steam. The

I'm not really sure why this focuses so much on React, when it's a general "issue"/"feature" More broadly, obviously there is some pressure to use a framework/library/programminglang/editor

Do you have actual examples of this? Your solution is to basically do a re-write when scale becomes a problem. Which is the textbook example of something that sounds good but never works On the other hand I can't think of a business th

I don't really get this line of argument Or at least it's not engaging with the obvious counterargument at all - that: "You may not need the scale now, but you may need it later". For a startup being a unicorn with a baj
