"Don't bite the hand which feeds you" is a common phrase for what you described. In my experience (20yr) good managers don't need any feedback. They were good because of clear communication as to what both parties expec

Which is where TDD can really help. Write tests first and keep revising your code - making plenty of mistakes along the way - until the tests are green. The quicker the test failure feedback loop, the quicker you'll fix the mistakes :)

The most important thing to me about remote communication is making time for "coffee catchup" to chat about non-work things. We literally sit down with a fresh coffee for 5mins just as we might when crossing paths in the office.

Fantastic blog to read - thanks! I sent it on to my father who spent time in Antarctica during the early 80s so it'll probably jog some memories to tell me.

FAANG salaries for developers are often double, if not treble, those of upper management where I work. There's absolutely no reason to feel like a loser on €65k. In tech it's easy to forget just how lucky we are with salaries.

DJs who use rotary mixers are great to watch. They're like precision surgeons gently blending EQs while also handling vinyl. Impressive stuff to me!

Xones are more like specialist precision tools that can be tweaked to a fine degree. Pioneers have many options to quickly bail out of a train wreck mix!

Allen & Heath Xone 96 (or previous 92 model) mixers are very popular in the techno world. Pioneer DJMs have dozens of FX combinations to aid with fast/fancy transitions, whereas techno/trance (and similar) genres that rely on

Preventative maintenance is a thing in both software and hardware world. It's often lower risk to apply frequent smaller changes than wait years for one enormous "bundled" upgrade.

To "conflate" is when two or more things are merged into one. In tech we usually assume "confluence" means the Atlassian product, not "a merging of several items".

Touring used to promote record sales when their main revenue was the music media itself. Thanks to Spotify (and streaming media in general), where music is almost worthless, artists need to tour and sell merchandise just to keep break even.

Even if I'm WFH I'll wear "office clothes". It makes me feel more "professional". In my brain this makes a clear separation between "home" and "office".
