Yes, there is a black market for coins here in Buenos Aires. That is part of the problem.

It costs a lot of money to make coins. With inflation appearing to always be just around the corner, the government if afraid of investing tons of money to mint coins that could some become worth significantly less than the metal they're ma

Engine Yard is a good company full of bright people. I worry a little for them that their business model is based on how complex it is to deploy Rails applications, and with the emergency of Passenger this problem is starting to go away.

I think a lot of what was said is right on - hiring the right people is hard and I've really stuggled with that at times. But I think making people code for free is somewhat unethical unless it's for open source. As an applicant I would f

With the release of the half-baked 1.8.7 a few months back, and now 1.9.1 being called the "first stable version of the 1.9 series" I'm a little bit confused as to what "stable" means for Ruby now. Is 1.9 still going to be considered a deve

Blueprint to me seems like a conceptual step backwards. While it does still separate markup from style physically, conceptually it's just moving the layout descriptions from the HTML attributes into the classes; there's 0 semantic value t

Part of me hates the fact that this works so well. But then again I think "in your face" is actually OK in this case, because you're making it easier for people to find what they're actually looking for. This is a whole lot more annoying wh

Whatever it is, start small. Smaller patches can be very useful and are also more likely to give you the satisfaction of being accepted. Even just correcting typos or grammar in a README can be useful as long as you're not a jerk about how

Don't feel like you have to do crazy low level stuff to be a good programmer. It's a big, diverse field and you can leave your mark wherever you want, and still have it be valued by others. Work on what gets you excited and makes you want

Being a hack to make a living sucks, but hey - everybody has to pay the bills. So there's no need to apologize or feel ashamed. If you find yourself bored silly with your programming gig, do yourself and other people a favor. Get involved i

Merb has grown so large, I think at this point Sinatra is better for very small projects. Use Merb if you want something like Rails, but with better internals and more flexibility of companion technologies. I see Merb as being like Postgres
