Thank you, I was looking for a link to that presentation this morning and couldn't remember who had given it.

As far as I can tell XML config files (at least those intended to be hand-edited) have largely fallen out of favor in non-Java open source projects. I also don't mind the current config file, but I've been using Apache for more than 10 year

Don't worry, you're far from alone. I sympathize with their desire to stand out from the other job ads, but this one is just silly. It gives the impression of a place, as Zed Shaw says, that identifies more with Rails than with their busine

If women simply find CS "undesirable" at a ratio much higher than men it would be interesting to try to find out why. To me there doesn't seem to be anything particularly masculine or feminine about CS.

So your logic is basically, "I have cancer, but it's ok, lots of other people do too. No need to see the doctor."

Sure, society has loads of examples of jobs being divided up along gender lines, and of unfairness against men too. But does that mean we can't even talk about why our profession in particular attracts so few women, while lots of other "k

A logical justification could be found for any order. It's just arbitrary.

For now, yeah, because 1.9 is still fairly new and not 100% compatible with older Ruby code. I imagine in a year or so everyone will be on 1.9 and this sort of thing will not be need by most people for a while.

As far as glacial release cycles are concerned, use Ubuntu, not Debian. Problem solved. And about packages getting rearranged, yeah, I like FreeBSD's ports better too, but you really should be using apt-get only to install rubygems and then

This looks like a pretty useful project. If you're using a Debian-based Linux distro, you also already have "alternatives," which is a pretty powerful framework for doing almost this exact thing.

"Ajax on Rails," while focussed on Ajax, has a lot of really good general information on Rails too, and is extremely well written. It's somewhat outdated now (really all Rails books are) but still very much worth reading IMHO.

People sometimes complain about Lua's tables, which use 1 as their first index when treated like arrays. I suppose it could make some algorithms more complicated but in my day to day programming it's never made any difference to me so far.

While I'm sure many readers at the NY Times may find the idea of a conservative advocating for same-sex marriage novel, it fits pretty squarely into the libertarian view of freedom. "Conservative" in the USA really doesn't mean what it used

WAIT just a minute... the dude took down a bunch of domains and accounts TODAY. Isn't this a tad premature for a eulogy ? Maybe we ought to wait until we find out what happened, and what _why intends to do before going into "mourning."

Unless you're an entrenched partisan, I think it's still a tad too early to call Obama's economic policies "disastrous" or "calamitous."

On a flight I once sat next to a Cuban-American man on his way back from a business trip to China. He told me about his company's work over there and how impressed he was with his Chinese counterparts. He had had a great time and looked for

Well, if they help EY develop products based around Java and JRuby, that opens up a potentially very profitable market for them. So I think they'll have more incentive to keep them on board for a while.

It might not be safer, perhaps just a better environment. Most of the people I know who work at EY seem to love working there.

I love Javascript, but I think people who want to develop server-side or desktop apps with it might be better served by Lua. Lua has functions as first-class values like Javascript does, which allows you to approach problems similarly in

Equine blacksmith. You're basically a cobbler/podiatrist for horses. All the fun of being an equine vet, without having to castrate them or stick your arm up their butts.

That's likely only a result of your unfamiliarity with Postgres relative to MySQL. Also, installing via apt on any Debian-based Linux is pretty much just as easy with Postgres as it is for MySQL.

Here in Argentina, if you search in Spanish, todoar.com.ar comes up in the top 10 for almost everything. I'll hand it to the owners, they know how to do SEO. The problem is there's no useful content on any of their ad-ridden pages.
