Handy man prices around here are $65 to $100/hr, and there is a huge wait list for the good ones. I've gotten multiple quotes on running the 240v line, the labor breakdown was always over $400 alone. Just having someone show up to

Labor chargers alone are going to be higher than that in Seattle. Just to have someone come out on a call is going to be 150-200. If it is an independent electrician who owns their own business, maybe 100-150/hr, if they are part of a

It is! With a UV sensor you can actually tell when someone is outdoors in the sunlight. The MS Band's sunscreen experience was tailor made to automatically remind people to reapply sunscreen when needed, but it was a fair bit smarter t

I'm sad that no product since the Microsoft Band has put a UV sensor on a watch. I'm biased because I largely designed the UV experience, but damn I miss having sunscreen reminders.

You are saying the exact same thing I am, just with different words. JSX makes it impossible to crap out invalid HTML because it is a library + toolchain (+ entire ecosystem) that keeps it from happening. JSX is always checked for validity

The magic system is amazing though, best I've played in any game. Easy to use, role play heavy, and it lets players go wild with ideas, but still reins in their crazier impulses. Mage: The Awakening is a minor rules revision to the mag

I ran a long running campaign, it is pretty fun. The game books were obviously written by artists and no mathematician was involved, some of the rules are very broken (may have been fixed in later revisions). The magic system is very fun an

Not directly as strings of course, but a for loop that outputs a bunch of JSX components based on the array return values from a DB fetch is dynamically generated JSX.

I was in Spain at the start of the year and I was impressed that drinks could be had for a price that only had one digit! I was also a bit confused about why beer was cheaper than water at some restaurants. That one threw me for a loop.

There was never a reason to visit DT Seattle outside of Pike Place Market. The restaurants there if anything have gotten better over the years, I'd say a decade ago most of them closed after lunch because everything catered to office w

Similar patterns in Seattle, many once popular sit down restaurants are now empty and only serve as sources for delivery. Huge buildings with dozens of tables sit empty.

Why? The current system graduates kids from poor to not poor. Sure it is a small number, but it is one of the pathways for social mobility in our society.

The point of going to an Ivy is to interact with the rich and powerful. It is a way for people to jump up a few social classes all in one go. If Stanford was just filled with kids who got high test scores, that purpose would be gone. Plenty

Swings layout stuff was fine, better in 2004 than anything the web had until 2020 at least. Also now nothing resembles native platform UIs, so that isn't a big deal. Swing was very theme-able, which is all anyone cares about now days.

Plenty of great UI toolkits exist. WPF was an amazing UI toolkit. Heck Silverlight was a great UI toolkit. Even Swing was nice to code in, it just ran horrible on machines of the time.
