In the video game "Rimworld", humans explore space using sub-light spacecraft piloted by AI carrying people frozen in cryosleep. A trip to a different star may take thousands of years, and you don't necessarily know where you

Any tool can be used incorrectly. IPv4 mapped addresses are a part of the protocol as any "expert" would know. How many bugs occur due to misconfigured HTTP servers every day? Do you conclude that HTTP is also a "no go"?

Can't you just draw the N districts that you want, then break out N new districts from those by extracting a "ring" from each. Then you have N districts each fully surrounded by another district. The only way to merge pairs o

Like with all contingency systems it's necessary to do a "fire drill" exercise from time to time. Pretend that you lost your data and attempt to recover a few files from backups. Pretend that your house burned down and you ca

Not recompile I guess, but you need to relink everything. Oasis seems to have a good way of doing that, with the whole system being built in a single tree by an efficient build tool (my recollection from last time it was posted). A dynamic

IPv6 adoption is low now, but the answer isn't to just give up and stick with IPv4 forever. As the extra cost of IPv4 keeps rising it will sooner or later outprice the cost of moving to IPv6. Similar as with fossil fuel cars -- super c

The bot simply did as it was told and didn't hurt anyone. The fact that this is seen as a malfunction says something. The real purpose of the bot was never to help customers, but to try to fob them off.

I see your point. Do you think some kind of federation could help here? If there were 10-100 different github-like servers all set up to "git pull" from each other, would that make it a decentralised system to you? Even email is n

PRs are decentralised. Everyone has their own "fork" of the repo, makes changes there, then tries to convince the maintainer of the "main" repo to pull. This is exactly what the decentralised model was meant to do. It do

In Haskell this should be "easy" to do using monads. You would have a process monad and an atomic monad (using Linux terminology). The operation to lock a sleeping mutex would live in the process monad. It would be possible to lif

I'm in the same boat. Apple hardware is perhaps the best available. The software that comes with it leaves a lot to be desired. I would rather just run a standard Linux system.

The concept sounds interesting, but the article doesn't do a great job of explaining how it works. How do I efficiently reconstruct the current state from the event stream? How would the event stream be modelled in the database?

Maybe not. The problem is that C++ (before C++20) has no normal print and format function. You supposed to do everything with streams. To switch to two decimal places you would first output some magic value that sets an internal flag in the
