I'm wondering what the author would make of Perl 6, which both embraces Unicode and allows the programmer to create new operators from arbitrary collections of Unicode symbols. It seems like his fondest dream and his worst nightmare at the

So they're going to announce 10.7 about the time I finally get around to installing 10.6 (if all goes according to plan).

I read it as we should be wary of a false negative. I was going to write that your other possibility seemed like good advice too, but on consideration, it probably isn't, at least without caveats. In this particular example, it sounds like

According to John Carmack ( http://twitter.com/ID_AA_Carmack , search for Apple), Apple asked him to also be at the conference, and he turned them down because of the conditions they wanted to put on him to do it.

I don't see any sign you're telling the author anything he doesn't already know. At least, it looks to me like his complaint is precisely that using and with are awkward solutions, because they break object encapsulation in a particularly

What sort of thing are you looking for? The current central repository for Perl 6 projects -- http://proto.perl6.org/ -- has a number of cool projects, but they don't necessarily all run under the current Rakudo, as there have been two w

I'm fascinated that so many of the commenters here seem to be focusing on the fact that the algorithm mentioned doesn't work in every case. My reaction was different -- I thought of a case where it would be less than ideal, and allowed it

That's funny, I tried using the Visitor Pattern very heavily for a while, and ended up deciding it wasn't worth the trouble. Using it made me feel very virtuous and proper for a few years, but I've rarely if ever used it in the decade sinc

I'm presuming this is a joke, because given the restrictions Apple has stuck on emulators, I can't see them letting a version of MAME (presumably with illegally copied ROMs?) through. That said, it's a killer idea, and I think it might well

Their code is import qualified Data.Vector as U main = print . U.sum $ U.enumFromTo 1 (100000000 :: Int) Possibly it's just because I don't grok Haskell, but that strikes me as incredibly ugly for such a simple operation. As

For the record, I've written 18,000+ test cases in the last year. When you can write reasonable tests, they are an awesome tool for programming. I just object strongly to the notion that any possible bug can be reduced to an automated tes

And of course, the testing for any bug can be easily automated. Not! Look, some things are very easy to test in unit tests: Does sin(180) return the right value? If I do operation X on supposedly const object O, does O have the same value
