Almost everyone I know who is successfully clean and happy in 12-step had long ago exhausted all the options: doctor, priest/preacher, psychologist, moving to a new town, "going to the gym", etc. Nobody would ever (myself inc

I think about that often-quoted statistic about Vietnam veterans, most of whom used heroin while deployed, yet only about 5% came back and were full-on junkies. Stuff like 12-step is for that 5%...the folks who have already been to the doct

I use luajit in a few places in my own stack (Redis, Kyoto Tycoon) and appreciate how magically fast it is. I have no idea how to approach a post like this. SSA, FOLD, it's all Greek to me. I feel pretty satisfied swapping an n^2 loop

OpenResty looks pretty cool. Have any patterns emerged for building large-ish apps on it?

If you're going to stick by your company, why are you interviewing? PS, good luck staying clean. Hit me up if you want to talk, I've been through similar stuff.

You're projecting! The author did not strike me as being incredulous. I think your own comment, your reading of the article, and your insistence (nobody is arguing with you) that you love your work -- this is the phenomenon being exami

I think some people are confusing the point. It's not about whether or not you enjoy your work. It's about the glamorization of working more than others. I think a critical mass of people have bought into the belief that overwork

Perhaps some people are content with their role. I know many engineers, who, by virtue of being productive, got themselves promoted into managing roles where they hardly ever write code. Perhaps this system works because it allows "cli

Depends on what you want to do. Php and MySQL, available on any shared hosting provider, can take you far. In 2008 I wrote an online food-delivery platform that served a busy college town. Plain old php and MySQL. It's still running to

Yes. I'm also curious about what kind of tradeoffs I would be making by choosing arangodb over postgres, etc. For example, with Postgres you have acid but not much in the way of horizontal scale-out. With Redis you have speed (single t
