There is this thing called culture, don't know if you heard about it.

My main takeaway was multi-methods, they didn't really click for me before I started seriously digging into CLOS. I wish more languages supported them/played around with similar ideas.

Not really, except having a lot of experience on board from the start. Which will also naturally attract more of the same.

I'm pretty sure they're paying for it though.

Reminds me of Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea :)

Where's the proof that humans of opposite sex are intrinsically attracted to each other? I can't see it.

How could they? They don't have the required information. Why should they? That's pretty much our responsibility.

Haven't written much Go the last year and a half... Mostly novel limitations that I'm not used to from C++. Instantiating generic parameter types is one thing I couldn't figure out at some point, but that's pretty much u

Who said anything about relocation? That has to be a tiny percentage of hires.

I personally think outsourcing hiring is the worst idea ever, and completely lose confidence in companies that do.

My first startup did one interview per person and then a trial period, all good.

You seem stuck on the idea that you need to verify an employee to hell and back before investing anything, that's not what I mean by committing. If they look like they might be a reasonable fit, give them a month to prove it, then you&

I'm fully convinced the way to make better hires is to invest more, which will be more expensive. Which wouldn't be a problem unless we expected something else. It starts with quitting pretending the current process is working, or

Yeah, you would need to change your expectations, I figured that much was obvious.

You're comparing an LLM to a compiler, which doesn't make much sense to me. If my compiler occasionally output the recipe for vegan pancakes instead of working code I would definitely think differently of it.

You would have to stop optimizing people to hell and back and start committing to a few at a time. Sounds like a really good idea to me.

You had someone check your work? That's awesome! Never happened so far in my 26 year career. It' almost as if they're hiring for something else than solving problems and writing code. Following orders, most likely.

So instead of being creative and finding ways to avoid duplication, you look for a way to make copies faster. That's one way to solve the problem. Not the way I'm looking for when hiring.

So, accept the overhead as the cost of hiring the right people?

I'm not talking about being watched closely, I'm talking about regular work and then making a decision. You have to leave people space to do their thing if you want to see what they're capable of.

Employers trying to hire for fit and culture has resulted in the most inhumane and counterproductive processes I've witnessed. If that's what you really want to do, let the person work for at least a month in the team.
