Beyond Rails and 37signals, I'm most familiar with him as a car racer, photography enthusiast, and his recent "buy once"/post-subscription software advocacy. This is an interview with him last year on "one person&qu

I understand the sentiment, but disregarding the nuance does the situation a disservice. HTML/CSS serves two separate but related use cases: a document layout and display language, and as a display layer for applications. I remember Pe

I agree with your point, but it is funny to think about true consumer workloads: I... mostly JIT and run Javascript, layout algorithms, and whatever compositing cannot be offloaded to the GPU.

Event sourcing is an expensive solution and I don't mean from a storage perspective — it burns engineering cognitive horsepower quickly on things that don't matter. Do it if you're in finance or whatever. Having been burned b

The Backblaze Drive Stats are always a good place to start: https://www.backblaze.com/blog/backblaze-drive-stats-for-202... There might be SMR drives in there, but I suspect not.

it's not clear that there is anything better to do than buy and hold low-cost index funds. Sure, 100%. The growth of this strategy has limitations though. Check out Mike Green's interviews on Youtube about the growth of passive

Whether it's actually correct, whether it works, I don't think that's even a concept in these systems. I'm not an expert, but it is a concept in these systems. Check out some videos on Deepseek's R1 paper. In part

I think this is a fun thing for TigerBeetle to do, but I'm pretty skeptical that this was a good engineering decision. Ha, yeah, as an 8 year software engineering manager I'll agree that "fun" is not a good initial loo

Agreed! The Principles of Product Development Flow by Donald G. Reinertsen[1] is one of my favorite product management books because it's very conceptual, but man the concepts hit home fast. This summary has a lot of great details [2]

The moment you let the low contrast gremlins out of the cage they start their mischief! Flat design is the more sucky partner to neutral palettes in current design trends, IMO. I want color too but it's not a clear step towards usabili

Do OpenAPI Swagger docs count? That seems to be the route a ton of the ecosystem takes. trpc, ts-rest, and express-zod-api all explicitly build on zod and can do validation + Swagger UI generation. hono looks like it doesn't do that by

Alex Krainer has speculated that Zelenskyy literally can't sign a mineral deal because those rights were a secret part of the UK/Ukraine 100 Year Partnership deal, making this all a bunch of theater.

I've honestly never heard of any dependency resolver that allows you to dynamically inject an override of a package's built in specification for an indirect dependency. npm and yarn both let you do it. PDM and uv think about it

Did they run into a hard blocker, or was it just that using version overrides was possible but painful? I started looking seriously at uv/pdm once poetry made it entirely clear they didn't intend to support version overrides [1].
