A standalone product can have its advantages if it's designed with care to the specific task of timekeeping (which most other PCs or embedded boards aren't). This product (from looking at the schematics) has a true voltage control

All the contemporary CPUs you find on affordable boards have only 3.3V (maybe some even 1.8V, at least on a subset of pounds) I/O. Not directly connect able to chips as used in the Alto. There are still a few CPLD/FPGA available w

There's a brilliant talk, given in 2009 at HOPE09, NYC titled "Indistinguishable From Magic: Manufacturing Modern Computer Chips". At roughly 36 minutes, there's a cross-section of a (in 2009) modern chip. The topmost la

So, structure your project that you can either use the internal PRU or an external motor controller… I don't see the big problem. I'd say that most embedded related projects will have to deal with newer revisions of their hardware

It would be very hard to get several mA of current through your body from only 50V. That's why up to 50V is generally consisted safe low voltage which is not harmful to touch.

For sure they will have used this (and just not have drawn it in the simplified diagram) as RS232 receivers would be very bad at pulling down the line, even to 0V. I cannot believe that this would have worked, even at slower baudrates, with

SLIP, being just a simple encapsulation for IP packets, might even work on this shared serial bus. Provided that some sort of collision detection would be implemented, so not to waste too much time transmitting corrupted packets.
