Cache is one thing, but also you don't need to repeatedly perform hash functions. Array index lookup is of course far faster than map lookup.

This is a very weird claim: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communist_state . Unless you are talking about the theoretical "pure communism" which is fiction/fancy and we may as well be talking about utopia.

It looks like your argument in the previous comment was that the threat of prompt injection attacks from language models is not credible, because humans are also fallible.

There's a big fallacy that's very important to point out (and probably why you're suffering downvotes) because it keeps cropping up, and is detrimental to the broader discussion if people internalise it. This is the fallacy:

You just have to include all the parameters of the animation as part of your "dirtiness" calculation. I reckon in practice this means centralising pretty much _all game state_ in some way that you force the dirtiness state to be s

This doesn't really work. By the time the driver or GPU could "know" that the frame is the same, it's already done a lot of the heavy lifting. As in, it has basically still rendered the next frame by this point. Actually

With a company as large as Apple, and a product with such high volumes, wouldn't this simply present arbitrage opportunities which would smooth out the costs again anyway?

The point is that there is no "generic" solution. The abstraction of the ORM has created the illusion that you don't need to worry about this, the ORM will handle it. N+1 examples like iterating over all the publications from

If only there were some way to retrieve information from disparate tables in a single request. Almost like some way to "join" the tables together... you could design a simple declarative language specific for querying in such a wa

So many people say this, but I have to imagine that such people haven't actually really tried to write SQL in their services and avoid the temptation to introduce all sorts of abstractions. Because in my experience this doesn't ha

I think you misunderstand my comment as an appraisal of crime, or something. My point is that wealthy financial criminals get off the hook way too freely, and that this is the injustice (relax, I'm not the justice warrior you think I a

I also find terminology games boring and pointless, but there's something quite interesting that lies at (I think) the heart of the debate: people tend to view a mesh as something like the underlying concrete object, and the textures a

My hot take is that React doesn't directly _cause_ slow performance, but that React is so well marketed as a first place to start for new programmers that the bar for quality is much lower than other industries (like game programming,
