The more I've used Actions, the more I have come to two conclusions: 1) It's generally better to just do things with legacy tooling and your own scripts, than it is to pull in community actions 2) GitHub badly needs to implement

Not sure why you're getting downvotes. iOS is where all the profitable users are. While that holds true, developers will be there to sell things to the profitable users. The principled indie developers might leave in protest, and that

And they already are, Apple (and indeed all companies) have to follow all sorts of rules in all sorts of countries. Some of those rules are fairly harmless, some of them are about radio power levels, some of them are "don't show t

This seems like a pretty helpful document, and really shows how carefully the CSAM system has been designed. Two things that stuck out to me: 1) The CSAM hash database is encrypted on-device 2) The device doesn't know the results of ha

If your threat model includes pervasive spying by multiple nation states, and being grabbed in the night by black helicopters, it seems unlikely you'll be overly concerned about them precisely inserting at least 30 of your photos into

You are absolutely correct that neither automatic nor manual review is ever going to be 100% accurate. I would like to believe though that for this system to fully fail an innocent person, the following would all need to have failed: 1) C

That is somewhat unclear at the moment. They don't get to see the actual image in your library, they see a derived image that's part of the encrypted data uploaded by your phone as it analyses the images. I don't believe any

That code is not accessible to us. The report to NCMEC would be generated by Apple after they have manually reviewed the derived images included in the security vouchers your device submitted after it analysed your photos.

Why is it insane that the law places extremely tight controls on the legitimate distribution of CSAM?

I think that section was rewritten, it currently reads: > [Revised; thanks CW!] Apple's iCloud service encrypts all data, but Apple has the decryption keys and can use them if there is a warrant. However, nothing in the iCloud terms

This isn't really true in a world where it's trivial to reverse engineer and decompile binaries. For example, we already now have a tool for generating NeuralHash hashes for arbitrary images, thanks to KhaosT: https://g

~10 years WFH here and my approach is similar to yours - my home office has become almost ludicrously well equipped. My approach is that I think about how much commuting would cost me, and consider that a reasonable amount to invest in my w

I say this every time a post like this comes up... Google is the web. Chrome is the web. It shouldn't be true, but it is.... almost. Safari, or more specifically Apple's requirement that all web rendering on iOS be done using WebK

I guess the cynical answer would be: because there is so much VC money out there, you can probably get funding for just about anything. I'm off to work on a pitch deck for coding bootcamps for cats.

In the long term, you are absolutely right. It's perfectly reasonable for people to want to have a #gentoo or #ubuntu or whatever, channel on Freenode. I also think it's reasonable for projects to have some time to disambiguate wh

What should I have done differently? I chose to move the official IRC channel for my FOSS project to a different server, so I registered the new channel on the new server, and updated the topic in the old channel to say it was no longer the

Freenode could have reached out to channel founders and asked us to leave the channels open, and allowed us to indicate that they are now unofficial channels. Instead they just revoked our access to them and overwrote the channel topics. Be
