Coq unifies terms and types, so that all you have a terms, but there's still a very concrete meaning of value: that which can be reduced no further (normalization, a property that the calculus of inductive constructions has).

How's performance with this approach? Can it push the 1080p display at 60Hz?

I know about GOL and other simple automata, I'm mostly curious about applications in image processing.

I'd be interested to learn more about this! I'm completely outside image processing/machine learning/whatever this is, but articles about it really fascinate me.

I use and enjoy firejail. I use it instead of grsecurity's RBAC on my desktop systems for basic sandboxing with minimal fuss on Arch Linux, where at least when I was setting things up, AppArmor needs a lot of manual configuration.

Even if this might be true, including a license of some kind is really a best practice at this point. Something like a Creative Commons license is probably more appropriate than the MIT license, but when there's an explicit license the

Poking around the demo this feels really polished, which is a welcome change from most tools in this space, as they tend to be awkward at best. I look forward to future features.

I think RISC-V is showing that RISC ISAs can still compete in this space: https://arxiv.org/pdf/1607.02318v1.pdf . RISC-V has extensibility of the ISA as a core feature, allowing for special-purpose accelerators and cop

Or an unstable sort (which none of grandparent's examples are, but aren't uncommon in naive implementations)

This can work for special-purpose projects, but might become problematic in general: reprogramming the FPGA can be slow (on the order of 10s of milliseconds) and you don't necessarily want to include FPGA state as part of task state in

I do agree, but I wouldn't include vector instructions in "simple RISC instructions".

One other tiny detail I noticed was that the text (and not just the red glowing title) flickered slightly as if you were watching a VHS.

When I started watching it I was expecting some cringe-worthy 80s nostalgia panning, but it was very tasteful. The little universe they set up for themselves is taken very seriously.

I agree a lot! I was pretty skeptical of the show, but the intro sequence really got me to sit down and give it a chance. It's really polished.

In Australia at least paypass/paywave is ultra common. Just wave and you're done. At least as fast as a swipe, and you don't even have to take your card out of the wallet.

It's important to note that perf is a sampling profiler using the CPU performance monitoring unit, whereas callgrind (and all the valgrind tools, in general) uses processor emulation to record every event.

Is that a typo of metafont, or is there another system called metaphont? I did a few web searches and didn't come up with anything.

Thanks! Guess I should have searched on youtube for the title - I searched on google for the conference mentioned in the slides and didn't find it.

I'm a huge fan of J, which is a descendant of APL, and has a libre implementation. I think it offers many of the same advantages in learning the array programming "paradigm", and has a few tricks of its own.

Great read. I love it when oral history in our field gets recorded. One of my great fears is that more interesting stories than not will be lost to time.
