I would argue that many people outside of Palo Alto would absolutely be fine living there even if it was substantially different. The primary benefit of Palo Alto is its location, which is close to many jobs and to San Francisco/San Jo

I've spent an afternoon in downtown Manhattan; it's rather a nice place. The world could use more places like that, preferably close to existing population centers.

For many (most?) drugs, the actual cost to produce the drug is usually far less than the selling price as it is an enforced monopoly. Given that monopoly, price restrictions don't actually restrict supply as the single supplier will st

Honestly, I think a big part of the problem is that passkeys have been tied to hardware devices and they don't have to be. A passkey is just a public key credential, and it can easily be provided by software as well as by hardware. You

One thing that is worth mentioning is the idea of a “private life” really hasn’t ever existed. Even before the internet and computers, banks still held records of customer identity, merchants would still track their customers and what they

I think the quote is referring to the stakes of the underlying decision being made, not necessarily the stakes of the politics. Academics will argue in great detail about trivialities and those trivialities can decide careers.

We already have car centric suburbia and its going to take decades to change that. We might as well switch to electric cars which are quieter and produce less air pollution rather than wait for thousands of homes to be rebuilt.

I feel like this take is dismissive and unhelpful. Expecting people to sacrifice their current wellbeing for the sake of a nebulous, far off reckoning is simply unrealistic and a bit of a dead end in terms of climate progress. We would be b

Not OP, but Apple tends to be a lot more straightforward in how they make their money. Their products cost more for the same technology, but in return they try their best to provide me with a good experience (to keep me buying their overpri

While I agree with your argument, it's not as simple as "letting the low value efforts die". If most anime were to stop being produced, most of the animators would also be fired and be unable to continue what is (I assume) th

Honestly? Because it’s Apple’s service to do with what they wish. I don’t view iMessage to be enough of a public good that Apple should be forced to make it public. There’s a lot of other apps like WhatsApp that provide open messaging and s

While we don’t know the whole story, I don’t think Sam is innocent in this matter. It seems likely that this was a recurring disagreement, and perhaps this was simply a step too far where the board had to act. When you fire somebody, typica

I think the trouble is that "model" is a very general term. If you had a computer doing simulations of artillery shots back in the 50s, then it would have a "model" of the world in terms of variables tracking projectiles

The argument “a sufficiently capable autocomplete must contain a level of general intelligence” is correct but also not very useful. It is a lot like saying “a sufficiently fast horse can fly”. It is technically correct that when you take t

I would argue that authentic is a relative term, and actually helped me understand the product more easily. IMO, it is “authentic” because, compared to other image fills, it tries to fill in the data using real data from other photos.

Trade should be reciprocal, that's how most trade decisions work. If you add a tariff to foreign goods, it's expected that the other party will add a tariff as well.
