I run a pihole at home, which has intermittent issues. When macOS can't resolve a hostname, almost every user-facing UI grinds to a halt. It's truly bizarre. Applications won't launch, menus don't respond, etc. Feels lik

I don't think it's a crazy comparison, but AFAIK Presto doesn't have a shuffle stage, which is fundamental in traditional MapReduce. They're both distributed computations, that's the comparison I would make. Edit: t

I had trouble accomplishing simple things like setting the maximum message size. You have to: 1. Either increase the default max message size on the broker, or set it on the specific topic(s) involved. 2. Set the max message size at every p

I don't think this is coming up enough in the comments! Kafka is a gigantic pain in the ass to run. Configuration is torture. I haven't used Pulsar, but please if someone has a message broker that's easy to run, let me know.

My exact thought! I have numerous tabs open, and have zero interest in fiddling with an approach like this. I don't think this can ever be faster than opening a new tab, for me. Safari on iOS added a feature last summer to auto-close t

I've had similar conversations. These guys were pretty open about the fact that they crammed for exams and didn't take undergrad very seriously. People that are in tech for the money is common everywhere, but there is definitely s

I've seen this bias in myself. I interned with several guys from India during college. I was an undergrad, they were grad students, having gotten their undergrad in India. We all went to the same university in the US. They weren't

Totally agree with your point, my comment was lacking the fact that I also have a very privileged upbringing compared to many Americans. I wasn't trying to speak down, but laterally. Tone is hard to convey online, but I can do better.

Tangential, but I think the underlying issue is that too many people (smart or not) are herded into careers they don't want, simply so they can earn enough money to have the lifestyle they want. There are very few careers in America to

This struck a nerve with me. I was a SWE at a company that moved to the cloud last year, after having a couple racks at a local colo previously. I was able to experiment and iterate so much faster when we owned hardware, despite all the clo

I understand your letter of the law/spirit of the law position on free speech. I agree that the dichotomy is frustrating, for a ton of issues beside speech. I disagree that "platforms" answer to a higher calling than I do. Th

The first amendment is about the government. Your speech is not illegal. The government cannot persecute you for your opinion or beliefs. It has absolutely nothing to do with your ability to be heard on the internet.

THIS is what I wish I knew about React. As a Java user, I made incredibly wrong and damaging assumptions because "classes, I know what these are"! I still can't make heads or tails of hooks, but in due time!

Scroll-jacking is a scourge. I appreciate what Apple and others are going for, but it's way overused and is better suited for a splash screen in a retail store than the main product page.

Very cool, so I can choose my own impl. Does Tokio have a true competitor today? From my cursory look at some projects, Tokio shows up everywhere.

Agreed. The post feels a bit pedantic; I don't know any dev doing "cool things" with the underlying namespaces/cgroups. They're just using Docker. De-mystifying containers has value, but so does the abstraction.
