VirtualAlloc can reserve address space and commit pages for it depending on the flag provided. Address space is a resource of the process, and pages are a resource for the entire system.

My memory is a bit hazy in this area, but I think by default memory is over committed in Linux. What that means is malloc() can return an address that doesn't have physical memory assigned in the page table. Memory isn't committed

How does Passenger deal with blocking I/O from applications if it is single threaded? Does the entire event loop block while doing I/O?

All heap access must be synchronized. Using pooled buffers may actually be faster because you can ensure that only one thread is accessing a specific pool. Just create a new pool, when a new thread is created.

I agree, given the type of issues they are addressing (very high throughput application servers), I don't think a general purpose allocator (garbage collected or not) will ever get the performance they want. Recycling buffers is not a

The other thing to remember was Windows was still 16 bit at the time. Linux started off as 32bit. Being free was great, but I would have also (and did) payed for a 32 bit operating system at the time. I actually used OS/2 in the mid-90

Somebody has to write the code that handles the failure. You don't get this for free. Creating a system that can handle outages of arbitrary nodes is not an easy task.

I remember years ago, I had a blog entry hit the homepage of Reddit: http://baus.net/rails-wrong-language/ . I think the user that posted it was Linuxer or something like that. But the account had a ton of karma and th

I'd consider NetFlix to be a prototypical Silicon Valley start-up and they are showing the way forward with House of Cards, which I thought was fantastic. It might be a Hollywood formula, but they are bypassing traditional distribution

I'm going to dig deep here, and say that true flexibility in memory allocation would require multiple global implementations of new, and when an object is deleted it would be destroyed with an implementation of delete the corresponds w

Fair enough. My point was poorly made, and truthfully it has been along time since I've done significant C++ work. But it is difficult for the users of libraries like the STL to mix and match their allocation strategies, so for all pra

I realize this, but you can't provide multiple global implementations of new. It is difficult to implement multiple allocation strategies in the same application. In another time, I actually did quite a bit of work in this area: http:

Personally I think the notion that C++ offers "precise control" as you call it is overrated. For instance flexible memory allocation is touted as an advantage, but in practice this is limited by the fact that there is only one glo

Years ago I used to buy and store wine, but I lost interest in it for this very reason. It is difficult to tell the difference between an inexpensive Cote Du Rhone and a $200 Hermitage, or the differences don't justify the cost (in my

I always thought NeWS was way ahead of its time. The modern web application stack looks a lot like what Gosling did in the 90s, but with PostScript replaced by JavaScript+HTML. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NeWS

It might happen, but at least in the segments of the industry I work in, I don't think it is common. What is more common is human error. Most of the businesses I deal with are highly regulated, and they wouldn't risk fudging the n

I'm glad this is being discussed, because for many years inlining functions was considered a performance panacea in C++, with no regard to the size of the object code that was being generated, or the effects inlining was having on inst
