I'm no fan of gratuitous changes that introduce regressions, but with always connected devices it's crucial to have all security patches applied. That said, the solution seems to be to differentiate critical updates and feature up

If the number of homes is significant, you can bet that Comcast and friends will hurry to make offers themselves, now that someone is becoming a viable alternative. It's happened the same way in Germany too. Zero activity up until a lo

Isn't it funny that Microsoft had this whole Scroogle campaign and now they're doing exactly that but much worse because they slip stuff you disable/removed back in via updates and updates cannot be selectively ignored/d

While it's the same problem on phones and you can disable stuff there, it's less of an issue because creation (media, software) happens on a PC and that's a lot more critical. Also, on phones Apple or Google doesn't snea

So, APIs are still thought as copyright'able and that was a different trial, right? Now Google was ruled okay to use that single, small function, or what was this about? A little more info would be nice for those who aren't follow

If you can map your workload and tasks onto Google Cloud Platform and the economics are in your favor, and you trust Google, it's a good thing. I'm sure it would work for many startups, but I'm curious how much of a lock-in i

I don't want to sound dismissive but why is that a deciding factor over, say, an Android phone? At least the UI should be easier to make snappy with Qt underneath so I'd consider it if I were in the market for a phone.

They can still be diverse to leverage certain strengths as long as there's enough compatibility that you don't have to rewrite everything from scratch. I'm hopeful for lowRISC as the spiritual successor to BS-5000 and i960.

Well, then EULAs as they are done today should be forbidden. I've read Apache2 and GPL2 licenses and I can't say I comprehend them fully. Read the liability clauses in GPL and Apache licenses and compare them to MIT or BSD.

The whole concept of EULAs that cannot be understood by non-lawyers goes against the aim of having them read and accepted by end users before running an application. The problem is that there's no standard text where it'd say you

A stake in the company means I own part of it, usually 5 or 10 percent at minimum to attract technical talent. Options or stocks are harder to quantify.

I don't think the requirement to buy a stake is the same rule globally. I've heard of people who got a stake just for joining with a lower salary but didn't put money into the company, just their work.

Thanks for digging that up. It reads vaguely familiar. The point of a EULA is for the End User to sign it. If the end user cannot understand it, does this mean they have to ask a lawyer before clicking Next in the installer?

What's the point of stock options? It's a piece of paper that allows you to buy stock if and when at a predetermined price. This price can be higher or lower, you cannot know beforehand. It's not a replacement for a salary or
