I'm always hearing about these and other problems that programmers have with the R language. In practice, none of them seem to be a big deal to statisticians. 64 bit integers? Never had a need for this, but maybe there is a package tha

I'm a statistician that knows just enough about computer programming to be dangerous. It's hard to overstate how incredibly important R is to my discipline. No other language allows me to express my thoughts and prototype statisti

That's fine, movie theaters can sell food for whatever price they want. My problem was that movie theaters don't sell anything we want to eat! candy and soda? No thanks!

Interesting, I alt as control on Windows and Linux. I wonder if there is a way to map Space to Control when tapped on Windows.

My wife and I are so frustrated by the movie going experience in the US. In Taiwan, everyone is permitted to bring food and drinks to the theater and that's pretty common. In the US I'm forced to pay an absurd amount of money for

I started using Linux for FLOSS reasons about 15 years ago, but now that I'm older and mostly just care about my computer working the way I want it, without bugs and distractions, I have really shifted away from my old free software op

Using Debian Mate on a T460 and I have to say I'm quite pleased. Sure Debian is stale, but as long as I can get a recent Firefox and Emacs, that's all the bleeding edge that I want. If I had a new Thinkpad T480, I would probably c

Nice comment, echoes a lot of my feelings about ML. I have a question. You write > (2) Okay, when simple regression doesn't fit very well, we keep trying? Okay. Say, we try logistic regression, ridge regression, L1 or L2 regularizat

I have not used a lot of mechanical keyboards, but I think there is a spectrum where laptop flat keyboards are on one end and clacky big mechanical keyboards are on the other end. For some reason I find that I like keyboards somewhere in th

Right, I am an evil user myself. My question was about the vim equivalent of major modes in Emacs --- Does vim have a concept of major mode (a set of language specific functionality, one major mode per buffer)?

As an Emacs user, I'm so curious about vim packages. Does vim have packages that are akin to adding a major mode in Emacs? Some of the packages on this list look like the vim version of minor modes or little helper functions.

My wife and I were just at a McDonalds in Portugal that had about 10 kiosks placed in groups toward the front of the store. This was one of those multi-floor, 100+ customers at a time McDs. I like the kiosks for the reasons you mention, but

I am reading _Command and Control_ right now, a book partly about a nuclear accident on American soil, but mostly about nuclear strategy and history up to 2000s. The writing style is not exactly beautiful, but I highly recommend to anyone i

For Emacs users, common wisdom is to swap control and caps. I urge you to try swapping left control with left alt instead. Thus you can use your left thumb to hit control and right thumb to hit Meta (alt). Map Esc to capslock if you use Evi
