The HTTPS support is required so that you don't get the mixed content warnings from some browsers. It's a must have.

I appreciate the small reference to "The Elements of Style" by Strunk. That book has helped me refine not only my writing but also my software design.

Yes - that's not the point however. It's the "hoisting" that is different within those blocks. Firefox isn't hoisting based indirectly on spec. This can be circumvented by not using function declarations and instead using variable declarati

The question I have (almost always when reading things like this) is what are the real advantages to a language being both static and dynamic? The only thing that I can think of is that you can have a type system, but then ignore that whene

This is a fair argument to make: "Remove unnecessary layers or complexity when learning new languages." And I also don't TDD when learning a new language - in the beginning. However TDD (when done pragmatically) is actually a great way to d

I would love to hear why GWT wasn't used more. It seems to me that GWT is not widely used even at Google.

This will be very interesting to watch. I remember when other IDE tried to setup this up (Visual Studio had a "hosting" feature for a while). Because the tech stack was so "config" heavy it was very difficult to get right in a lot of cases.

I don't know that it required an apology or if he was even really wrong in the first post. The result was his digging into it to figure out the default config included a computationally expensive setup. That's a debatable thing. Not necessa

It's great to follow up. Especially with such a particular detail. It's also good to have thick skin. HN can be aggressive. But for good reason. I'd be willing to bet this tiny sting will result in more rigor in the future. I know it has wo

I wouldn't characterize it as "semantic". It is definitely the Microdata spec from HTML5. But it's barely semantic.

I would apply the same methodologies to finding out if your problem solvers are "happy with the solution(s)". There are plenty of occasions where engineers are handed solutions they aren't totally keen on. The same trap can be landed in. It

Not at all. In fact you should always wait until eye contact. I can't count the number of times I wish I had stared down a boss to make him/her understand that I was drowning in boredom only instead to give a quick smile and nod while conti

Abstrations are hard to debug, require a learning curve of 2x the original problem and are rarely complete. Thank you for that. I've been looking for this concise a statement to make in debates I've had in the past.

In my opinion, the best part of their infrastructure is their willingness to specialize in languages within each stack. It isn't simply "Java everywhere". "To allow developers to choose the best language for the job, Twitter has invested a

I realize I implied "every table or model", and I would always argue for composition the way you describe it. But ... there are good reasons to decompose and expose these things in your API. While maybe not for Public consumption but certai

You may find that Sling supports you're request here. But to the extent that they are all "lame database serialization" layers, I'd have to say "well - ya". REST is kind of just that. I think that what you're really trying to say is that im

Content Negotiation is a critical part of REST APIs and it's my observation that most simply ignore or default to JSON in all cases. Good REST APIs allow the client to "choose" the mime type. Without this part of REST - you have no "represe

Maybe not encrypting text on a page, but possibly to encrypt JSON data to local storage for persistence. Never do this with absolutely private data, but then again.

Good questions/points. I would only respond with that in particular, GWT is more than a compiler - it is as much a JRE as anything. So there is more to it. I personally don't see Google doing much public interaction with the development of

Reading this made me think about the punk movement in music. In the beginning it was about being different. Real punk was anything that your parents and friends didn't like. It wasn't about the kind of music you were playing per se, rather

Let's not forget though - "I'm just doing my job" absolutely applies here. DPS did not create the laws. They enforce them. AZ is the state where a guy died doing his job in a photo radar vehicle. He was shot by a guy who felt the man in the

When disagreeing, please reply to the argument instead of calling names. E.g. "That is an idiotic thing to say; 1 + 1 is 2, not 3" can be shortened to "1 + 1 is 2, not 3."
