How long did the whole piece take to put together, and what's the rough break-down of time spent on each component (data wrangling, finding useful sorts, visualizations, write-up)? Thanks!

well, when you're searching tech job boards, it sure matters. As (another) Systems Engineer (in the sense of Von Bertalanffy not Von Neumann), searching for relevant jobs is a _huge_ annoyance. I've given up on titles, and search for, or lo

You're absolutely right about herd mentality and the overall process that isolates trouble-makers. But I wasn't asking for proof that people aren't upset. I'm questioning the idea that a majority of fliers see _nothing_ wrong with this proc

Thanks, that's a fair reference. Still, they weren't measuring whether most people see _absolutely nothing wrong_. That's a fair piece further. Boycotting, protesting, or requesting disclosures under FOIA take a lot of effort and risk. The

Do you have some evidence for this assertion? I see it commonly given here -- treated almost axiomatically -- but is there any actual evidence that 'the average American sees absolutely nothing wrong'? Or are we just assuming we know the mi

Replying here, because for some reason can't reply to your child comment. I still use Delicious for all my book-marking. For a time, it looked like it would get killed off, but that didn't happen. I'd be interested to know what anyone else

I wondered about the etching process too. It might not be at all like a normal R/W pattern for a DVD. They could conceivably be scanning radially, or using a very slow revolution, or (is this possible?) re-tuning the beam's frequency. Not i

This is all spot on. And despite the somewhat humorous, but not at all rude tone, this guy did some real leg-work to type this up. Documenting something in that much detail takes a lot of time (he went so far as to find the missing dependen

Interesting. I kept wanting to rotate the cube in your game. Nice to see it in the 3d-logic game the other commenter mentions. Do you plan to add that?

The general case might be something like that, but you only need any given configuration that fits those parameters (that is, you're not trying to solve complete, abstract topological problems). Maybe if you arbitrarily fix the first path,

Thanks for mentioning Lilly. His book on his studies of dolphins* was a good read when I picked it up a decade or so ago. The comparison of brain- to body-mass across humans, elephants, and dolphins was compelling, alone. * http://www.amaz

It might be that three traits usually represent an arbitrary number of dimensions sufficiently well (factor analysis, PCA). Or that thinking about more than three gets very hard (number of distinct combinations), so we just resort to three.

Good point (I don't work in CAD myself). But for exploratory efforts, like rotating a mathematical structure (MathBox), say. Or for exploring a Microsoft Photosynth space (this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-DqZ8jAmv0#t=232 , not so muc
