> The average American will spend over six months of their life behind a traffic light. Yeah if you spent 8 hours a day at a light! I think somebody applied the *60 operation twice…

> I bought a Thinkpad [t480]… For my hostname I chose “dell-latitude-e5430”. I don't know why. Wait, what would possess you to use that hostname? It’s like buying a Honda Civic but referring to it as your Ford Focus.

Could there be value in cultural diversity analogous to value of biodiversity? I think of Andrian Berry’s warnings about a world state. I fear a world monoculture is one step in that direction. (Just googled him, seems time has been unkind

Anyone else here like to eat milkweed? (Asclepias syriaca) My favorite way to prepare is gently steaming the flower buds when they are about 2/3-grown. But the young greens and young pods are good, too.

By “kind” are you referring to a species or a subspecies? To my knowledge Asclepias syriaca is native only to North America. But there are other plants——most infamously Phragmites australis——where it’s native but there’s an invasive subspec

Really important comment! Is having a bad recessive a “pre-existing condition”? Or do genotypes form already legally protected classes? Clearly we need good lawyers here, or careful regulation, or public medical insurance. I hope it doesn’t

My experience is the converse: when distracted, I assume I am the author of my thoughts, the doer of my actions, but when I really pay attention, I notice that thoughts and intentions arise unbidden. I identify with consciousness, and the o

I’ve wondered how that works. Quite a risk to take out such a loan! I’ve never had that level of confidence in my employer.

You have me there. Worked most my life in angel-backed startups or government-funded research, so it’s hard to conceive of a going concern! Everything in tech feels boom-or-bust.

“Conscience”, there’s a word I haven’t heard in a while. If an act is “unconscionable” well then it’s legally indefensible. But the broader idea of “having a conscience” seems to have receded, to the point I don’t really know what it means.

I predict the rise of anti-technology cults as the moral panic over AI and “Social” takes hold. The millions of displaced workers and disillusioned social-users will need refuge.

Totally agree about diversification. Reliance on a company pension fund is terrifying. That said, the old pension model forced workers to make large contributions. The 401k model does not. (Unless your company has some amazing match deal… I
