It would be convenient to use async, but the other requirement is that we don’t want to change the outwardly-observable API of the software under test. Since async is “infectious,” we have to use sync implementations for sync APIs.

For now, you may want to use VSCodium [1], which is a variant of VSCode which doesn't ship any non-free components (and also doesn't include Microsoft telemetry and such). [1]: https://vscodium.com/

For an alleged expert in sword fighting, this post is awfully short on details. I’ll note that the overwhelming majority of combat in premodern history is not one-on-one, and is instead between teams in a formation (typically each of whom h

Your edit is roughly correct. It's a bit odd that they're comparing a single human-made policy with the very best of the DrEureka outputs; in practice, I would expect to make multiple different reward functions and then do validat

I've been following this project for a little while and it's very exciting to me. It's cool to see some movement on it since FreeCAD hasn't seen a lot of development and the rest of the OSS parametric CAD field is rather

There is perhaps some irony in the fact that this blog was posted to Medium, which serves 10.88 MB for a 265-word article.

In addition to the other comments, "Nightfall" by Isaac Asimov also covers a similar topic, especially in the full-length novel (though I prefer the short story).

In Rust, let-else patterns don't allow this, but match guards (used in `match` expressions and the `matches!` macro) can do something like this. while matches!(iterator.next(), Some((a, b)) if a + 1 == b) { println!("Hel

That's very interesting to me - I had seen the `[unknown]` mountain in my profiles but never knew why. I think it's a tough thing to justify: 2% performance is actually a pretty big difference. It would be really nice to have fine

It looks like the original publication of the timeline was on Avid (the video editing software)'s Facebook page on March 1 [1]. I haven't seen any publications older than that (yet). The timeline was later published to their YouTu

This tracks roughly with my experience learning Esperanto. It's a very cool language with many interesting quirks, but there just aren't a lot of people who speak it, and nearly all of them speak English anyway. I don't regre

By robot standards, $25k is not a bad. Most mobile-manipulator robots cost 5 digits or more, mostly due to the small market, high materials and engineering cost, and general headaches of robot building.

In terms of the theoretical guarantees, a PD controller is (nearly) always stable and pretty easy to critically damp. However, if the set point is moving with a nonzero velocity or there is some load, then the PD controller will not converg

I started blogging this year, and so far, it's been a lot of fun! Most of what I write is a mix of personal projects and opinions. I recommend keeping a target audience in mind, ideally someone you actually know - in my case, I write f

Yes, this is doable. Sharing an account across multiple devices is kosher to my knowledge. Steam also has family library sharing, which allows games to be shared across accounts (with some restrictions).

If you’re willing to implement your own mutex, it actually is possible to enforce! You could make disabling interrupts emit a token and then require the mutex to accept that token as a parameter to its locking behavior.

Thanks for the kind words! Yes, I'm fully aware of the fact that teaching isn't really a priority in academia - for that reason, I probably won't be reviving my class in the near future. I really do like teaching, but it does

These issues are currently handled by my library. It’s not mentioned in the blog post because it would be a little distracting. Dereferencing a “dead” GC during Drop currently yields a panic, while all GCs must be ‘static.

In Rust, macros work at the tokenization level. Making a macro do that would require the macro to fully parse and analyze the syntax tree - possible, but not very efficient. Additionally, there's no guardrail to enforce that the user d
