Serious question based on this: Are DOM-based video games viable to make since it's just so easy to simulate DOM events like that?

You're right that EventMachine helps when you're dealing with IO-limitations (like those commonly found in web applications), but for CPU-limited functions like the ones that you see in programming competitions, it's not going to provide mu

How can you quantify something like this? Software engineering has so many different specializations that it's possible that everyone is better in different ways. I might not be the best at solving problems such as the ones on TopCoder, or

As a huge board-gamer, I always love seeing the "making-of" of different games, and this one is no exception. I especially thought the prototype was pretty hilarious, but it definitely makes sense to have one when working with a physical p

Rosalind [1] (previously posted on HN) is pretty good for something like a Project Euler for bioinformatics. The problems are pretty similar to the introductory computational biology course at my school for upper-year undergrads and first-

Sounds really cool! We usually just use PyMOL [1] in our lab, but it looks like BioBlender takes PyMOL, Blender, and a few other structural biology and builds on top of both of them. It looks like the biggest contribution from BioBlender is

This is pretty awesome. It seems like the models are similar to the operational transformation models that they've been using in Wave/Docs (with the batched client operation submissions). It's definitely much more advanced than what Meteo

Great write-up, and awesome list of resources! The only thing I'd probably add is that there's a pretty significant gap going from learning linear algebra to more advanced topics such as LDA. For people who are just getting started with mac

A good strategy I've found was suggested by Reid Burke in response to this answer: http://reidburke.com/2012/09/27/write-code-that-works/ Your code isn't uniform, and so you shouldn't be expecting 100% code coverage on everything either.

I really like using iodocs by Mashery, it's pretty simple (put all of your API calls into a single JSON file) and it allows you to quickly do example calls with different query parameters that your users can test out right on the documentat

Great points all around, but I don't necessarily agree 100% with his thoughts in the pharmaceutical industry. For specific drugs, this may be the case, but when you have pharmaceutical companies doing things like patenting specific gene seq

Is there a best practice of doing authentication for single-page apps when you don't want to use an external OAuth provider, since a lot of people don't have Twitter/Facebook accounts? Would you end up writing your own OAuth provider in tha

The point of the article is good, but the tone of it seems a bit immature. I don't care much about someone's age, as long as they can act in a professional and responsible manner when it comes down to it. I can respect her doing so much at

This will effectively limit you to making requests to services that provide an API that supports JSONP. If you're going to do something like this, why not just use Heroku or something similar? Unless you're relying solely on external APIs

Unrelated to the topic at hand, but if you want to make something in a treemap format, d3.js has a pretty fantastic treemap framework that you can customize pretty well. http://mbostock.github.com/d3/ex/treemap.html
