MIDI controller and GarageBand is a good place to start. Or you can buy Logic, it's got a similar interface, but more features and a large sound library and some fun virtual synths.

I did that for a few years, although your job sounds a bit more stressful than mine was most of the time. I never got paid extra, but the job had some nice perks. I am way happier now that I don't have to carry my laptop with me 24

Yeah, I used to do rocketry also and we had to get certification and FAA clearance to launch rockets with the high power motors.
