I struggle with this one. We have been on the Google roller coaster a few times now, where for no apparent reason our traffic goes up or down wildly. From this I have developed a (likely) irrational fear that messing with things by removing

Good question. They had built a lot of internal tools and datasets that we rebuilt and released. It was a competitive advantage before.

Much of the information about existing drugs was organized, but within textbooks (Merck manual, etc). It had never been systematically structured and organized online (but likely internally within pharma). The data was (is) manually curated

My project in University (and now my company) annoyed a lot of companies when we first published DrugBank in 2006. We basically opened up the data on potential APIs and their targets into a downloadable and useable data set. I remember goin

Indeed, I was at a biotech drug conference in Berlin last year and was astonished at how little direct research large pharma are engaged in. They've completely offloaded primary research to drug development companies. Maybe it has alwa

A&W in Canada has a Beyond meat burger and a Beyond meat breakfast sausage sandwich. I go there semi-regularly (being the best fast food restaurant in Canada in my opinion) and I am astonished - almost every second person in line is ord

Unfortunately UMLS and Wikipedia are not good enough for drug information. Structuring that data requires a fine balance of tooling (with some NLP) and a good team of biocurators (doctors, pharmacists, pharmacologists and domain experts).

Keep in mind there is also the try! method to raise an error if the method does not exist (which is now likely implemented as &.)

An aside but surely this must be positive in terms of environmental impact. Imagine the millions (billions?) of desktops and laptops that have not been manufactured or powered because of the widespread availability of phones.

I love these burgers! They have actually helped me transition to completely beef-free since they address that occasional fast food burger craving. It’s interesting to note that A&W Canada is entirely separate from A&W in the US. A&a

I agree completely. For me part of the issue is that getting angry (or pretending to) does work at certain ages! Right now my 6 and 3 year old sleep in a bunk bed. The 3 year old lately has been prodding the 6 year old when they are suppose

I live and co-founded my current company in a colder northern Canadian city. Often we get derided by larger urban centres in Canada, similar to being labeled "flyover" country. But what I've found is that there is a sweet spo

Out of curiosity where are you located? I chatted with my partner, a K-6 teacher and here they get 30 minutes to eat followed by 30 minutes to play or go to an activity (like choir). This seems reasonable to me.

It’s important to note that this is taught in schools starting from as early as grade 1. I do believe that teaching children about the joys of eating food and sharing meals could have a positive impact. Consider France, arguably one of the

You should give crystal a go for the parts you need to be performant! You can even prototype those parts in ruby and easily convert to crystal when it becomes necessary. We’ve found a really nice balance, with business logic and interfaces

This makes me think about data backups. It might make sense to only get a notification if a backup failed, but then how do you know the backup system is actually functioning at all?

I would highly suggest checking out Halt and Catch Fire. It's a period piece, but I think it captures the spirit of Northern California. The first 2 seasons are in Texas before they jump ship to San Francisco.

Fair enough, that does make sense. It's hard to understand how much the game has changed until you watch an older game from the 80's, it's a different flow entirely. On an unrelated note, I am lucky to have some very cherishe

Watching McDavid or Crosby on the ice, live, makes it very clear that they are still absolutely in a class of their own. I think these types of players are so good that they change quicker than the game can adapt. Crosby had some trouble in
