Yeah. Sometimes I find it easier to write a program parsing log files with the line number and PID to step through. Sometimes I think the people who have success with debuggers often must be working on a different class of problems than I

I spend my time in C++ and Python land the majority of the time. I have had to jump in to fix front end bugs a few times... This page reflects my experience fairly well. I spend hours trying to find the magic incantation of bower, grunt,

An outside opinion... The JavaScript world is so fractured, what would you use? Kotlin, Dart, Elm, CoffeeScript, ClojureScript, Nim...? Which ones will keep going?

While you might be right (I don't know, I have used JACK, alsa, and pulse), for me pulse basically works 99.9% of the time. Sometimes garbage on top of garbage is the easiest path towards a practical solution. I just want my desktop t

How important is technical defensibility? On one extreme I could have a technically sophisticated product with a poor user experience. On the other, an off the shelf software catalog with great user experience. Ideally you have both... R

You claimed there was no benefit to expression templates and I agreed that in C++98 this is true. Auto can introduce complications, I agree... I have a few times experienced the aliasing bugs it introduces, it's tricky and not a panac

It depends on the codebase you are working with. Prior to 'auto' it was difficult to impossible to annotate expressions (thus forcing evaluation on assignment). Many people still believe "more lines of code = more slow"

Thank you for the considerate and thoughtful response. Your point about embedding false information in a mountain of true things is something I had not considered. Sorry to hear of your personal trials. I still think in naive terms, I supp

If you are using Julia, then I will presume you are primarily working in some form of numerical computing. It is a very wide field, so it is difficult to say if object ownership will be tricky or not. If you are working with (b|m)illions o

I find it shocking that you would post on HN; "Hey guys, I make $125k/mo making other peoples lives harder". Given the way your current infrastructure is configured (vulnerabilities and all)... somebody could probably cost yo

I wish this was more pithy. But I 'ask a historian': When did privacy become considered an inalienable right? Still, the autonomy of US Tech companies internationally would scare me too... especially as a smaller nation (some co

Every other report I have read stated /all HTTP sites/ are marked insecure. If this report is accurate, that's wonderfully relieving. Does anyone know with certainty?

I find it sad that corporations have decided the internet should be predominantly a private space. Think of it, all of those brilliant http://c2.org wiki's and ASCII-doc sites are now marked "insecure". Fundamenta

One of two (or both) things would need to be changed for it to be generally useful: - The return value should be a WeakPtr, not a bool and a reference. This allows for data to not be duplicated by all of the different `getter` threads. A

Paravirtualization loses instructions which are useful for high performance computing. That's not relevant to isolation/protection... but it is worth mentioning.
