San Francisco has homeless shelters and a program to get transients into permanent housing. The homeless who need showers are the ones who refuse the program.

TCP deals with congestion and bandwidth allocation automatically. Decades of algorithms work in your favor if you use TCP. A single missing packet will seriously mess up your video stream. Remember that long sequences of movie pictures are

An anti-virus vendor really wishes Apple would let them sell software to Apple's customers. Of course, they'll need Apple to first remove the sandboxing requirement so they can snoop on other apps. Conveniently, that will open up

The context was a CEO in front of multiple reporters. A CEO's words always matter; when spouted in front of reporters, there are no do-overs.

The mission was not a success: it did not meet their minimum goal of one week. Failure happens and is nothing to be ashamed of when trying for such an ambitious goal. ESA needs to own it and move on.

Nice idea, but what about the Elephant in the Room? How do you eliminate the buildup of salt in the soil which can ruin the farmland?

Perhaps it is just that modern CPUs are powerful enough that even the low-end ones are now Good Enough for most people. There have always been cheaper CPUs available; Apple just avoided them in favor of a better experience.

Yes, that's long been the obvious stupidity in Apple's Mac line: the lack of a mini-tower. Mini-towers let you stick in a full power desktop CPU and as much disk space as you want. Moreover, they dropped the expandable Mac Pro in

Settling just means that PG&E did a risk analysis on how they thought a jury might respond. Yes, the Chromium was high, but high-Chromium combined with a cancer cluster is still just a reasonable outcome from random probability.

No worries. My point is really to say, "what kind of sample size do you have in mind"? In this instance, the sample size seems to be everyone in a particular region who has played soccer. That's just too vague, in my opinion,

"If an area get's 10% more cancer than expected but twice the breast cancer then there is probably a local cause." That is incorrect: deviation percentage is meaningless without a sample size. In a group of 100 people, twi

NASA had a "go cheap" program to try crazy stuff on a shoestring that just might work. There were good results like Pathfinder ($150M) which tried the crazy idea of landing using an airbag. The problem is that the Powers That Be w
