A tailings pond 1 mile across instead of dumping the sludge into a river? I'm genuinely uncertain about what is supposed to outrage me, and the article's tone implies I should be outraged. It's problematic that it sounds like

It is nearly impossible to be objective about your own brain. If you suspect X makes you happier, then it probably will. After it works once, you will probably believe X makes you happier, and if definitely will. In other words, even if fis

All of the new codecs the author proposed as alternatives have the same issue: companies who took no part in creating the codec may someday decide that the codec infringes their patents and make everyone using the codec pay for a license.

This cannot be said often enough: "non-profit" is a phrase relating to the tax situation of a corporation. It is not synonymous with "good", "charitable", or even "not greedy." On the flip side, "

That's my new pet peeve -- using "page down" on an article only to have some of the content I want to read hide under an idiotic header floating over the content.

You're right. A more nuanced way of putting it would be that the Republicans prefer that government interfere less with economy. To that end, they support regulation which restrains government from interfering with the economy, and are

It has everything to do with politics: one party is more prone to regulation than the other, and it's easier to build where there is less regulation. There's a spectrum of regulation levels in the country, and Republican areas ten

"Mostly self-driving" just seems crazy to me. As soon as the car is able to drive on a major highway, you're going to have "asleep at the wheel" issues, and the car cannot simply hand back control to the driver. The

Guinea pigging a hormone only expressed during development runs a very serious risk of giving yourself cancer. Fortunately, these scammers are probably shipping something harmless instead of the actual product, so no one is likely to die.

Don't feel silly -- many Valley cities have strict rules on building height too. Ideally, we'd like high-rise living next to mass transit, but I outside of downtown San Jose, I doubt any city would approve.

Your alternative is mass-transit. If your work is in reasonable proximity to BART, Caltrain, or a Ferry, then check out where that mass transit leads to and see if you can afford to live there near a station and if you can stand the commute

No. The Valley is geographically constrained. The mountains enclosing it are too rugged to safely build on. The best you could do would be to permit high-rise housing which would provide some expensive housing to the high-end. A better idea
