This seems like more of a dig than a genuine question but assuming it is genuine... Here's what I'd say. Where I work, time in the job doesn't necessarily correlate with career progression. It is dependent on continuously dem

Good point. This is actually something I have not done well. Or at all. I’ve been pretty much working and operating solo for the past two years, which isn’t great. I also live in Seattle which I have found not very conducive to networking,

Do you mean of a specific company? I’m not sure which companies I’m interested in yet so it’s a bit of a chicken-and-egg problem in that case. But yes I agree I need to chat with someone at prospective companies once I find one I like!

I think it will be interesting to see how existing and upcoming Meta (FB) products compete with Apple products in the VR/AR space. It seems to me like Meta might have some advantage here initially, but in the long run I'm not sure

I don't love these aspects. We generally don't have them as much where I work (I think). Maybe I've just never noticed.

I assume you made the jump. What was the outcome? Did you find it just as easy to find offers elsewhere as you did when you were at a big company (if you were looking at all)? I am partly -- perhaps irrationally -- concerned that going to a

It looks like Facebook's `folly` library had an implementation of coroutines available in their experimental directory since mid-2018. There was still some evolution going on after it was pushed though (and it seems like there still is

Beyond increasing complexity, I think this also assumes a dependency graph that _can_ be broken down into microservices by the author/the author's team. From my experience a lot of things at this scale have such complex dependenci

That's fair, I think I forget that not everyone knows that this is a project managed by a consortium, not by a single company alone.

I think it's more of an anti-tech mindset more than an anti-Facebook mindset. If Google did this, I imagine that Germany would be just as upset. If, for example, Goldman Sachs did the same thing, that might not go over smoothly, but I

Maybe the technique in this post is common, but I personally believe that putting yourself and your thoughts out there is a good thing for engineers and critical thinkers in general. It allows us to get feedback and involve others on a wide

Some of the examples listed when the author speaks about why they are such a good learner felt a bit forced to me. I understand that authority is being established here, but a good number of the early examples seem to be what I would expect

One of my professors condensed that point into something I thought was clever: "Software engineering is the distilling of ambiguity". I think about that whenever I get frustrated about a vague spec or lack of details. It's th

I also worked through the courses in this series, up through Part 4. I thought it was a great way to get introduced to Rust, especially when concurrency comes into play. Having only ever written this sort of code in C/C++/Java, th

I never believed number 1 until relatively recently. After growing up in a family where work was life, it didn't make sense to me to do anything but work (even if constant work made me miserable). Now that I'm out of school and I
