I think it was pretty clear that Wave wasn't going to take off as a replacement for email (or, much else) once the fifth or sixth person asked how you could "make a wave send you a note in gmail when it updated".

What I've ultimately discovered is that the only time people enter "Can we afford it?" into the discussion, it's because they're looking for an excuse for it not to happen. Try taking a close look at how the US budg

The key ingredient, which you certainly had and the author didn't, was buy-in from an authoritative level of management. Yes, put in the work and it's possible... as long as the VP doesn't shut it down.

I wonder if it's possible to write one extension using WebExtensions, which does a better job supporting OpenSearch? I know that WebExtensions is limited, but all one would need to do is read the OpenSearch data, store it somewhere fo

tl;dr: An author (and, not an especially good one) is willfully irresponsible in spending her large publishing advance, and blames absolutely everyone except herself.

In my opinion, a rejection is an expected outcome, and therefore should have a response code of 200. You're not asking, "Does this card exist?", and sending a 404 if you have no record. You're asking a remote system to

I like to customize my phone to be exactly what I need from it. Things I do that are only possible in Android: 1) I script some behaviors using Tasker. One example is that I have a script that takes it out of vibrate mode and turns on the

I prefer to write them by hand. Most APIs, to start, don't have a lot to them. They tend to grow in scope over time. So, it's pretty easy to just throw together your initial idea, and incrementally grow it from there. I might t

I think you'll find that it's easier to do in Atom. However - Atom's API is also probably easier to shoot yourself in the foot with. Maybe try getting started on both, and see which one is easier or more comfortable?

Two things about VSC, in comparison to Atom, that are Done Wrong: 1) Extensibility. There's like a dozen times more friction involved in creating a plugin for VSC than for Atom. Atom was built to be as easy to change as a web app. T

You know, if you look at the current timeline, you'll see that much of the "JS churn" has basically stopped. I mean, yeah - people are trying new things, and products are being maintained. But, the landscape today is really

There will always be a use for jQuery. Just not every use. If you're looking to make simple, imperative changes to the DOM in a web page, and not worry about what browser it's happening on, it's still the go-to choice. Ye

I'm going to second that. I don't ever consider CTH, and there's a pretty strong body of programmers who feel the same way. There's too much risk in it.

I hate to say this, but the startup graveyard has a really huge section filled with every company who has tried to do this kind of thing. you feel like there should be a way to improve on something that people are already passionate about,

They're going to have to support it in perpetuity, most likely. There are too many packages written in CS, which are relied on, and which are not really maintained so much.

Absolutely. I can tell you from experience, on both sides of this fence, that hiring managers ask for the moon, and rarely get everything. But, that's not the point. A manager wants staff that can do the job as necessary, and you ca

I really hate to say this, but I think that the "darkening of the net" is the intent. There are far too many people there who subscribe to the "Deaf Persons as a separate race" idea, and look at sticking a thumb in the

For anyone ready to hate on JIRA, spend some time using VersionOne instead. It'll take a week for you to want to run back to JIRA, screaming.

Another vote for "Consider alternatives". I happen to like Semantic UI a lot, but you can also consider something smaller and less proscriptive than Bootstrap, like Skeleton or UIkit.

If those are my choices, then I vote for command-line, hands down. I've been doing this stuff for 20+ years, and if there's anything I've seen in this business that has remained constant, it's unix-ish shells and the pr
