And how do I get these firmware updates and microcode updates on Windows? Checking AsRock, there aren't any Bios updates. Also: > Customers who only install the Windows January 2018 security updates will not receive the benefit of

The "fear" with ME is more that governments or someone like that could spy on us... (not really a "threat" to most people in Western Countries). But still better to get rid of it. Not an imminent threat per se. This bug

It's ok. The 9th generation of Intel will be 50% faster and the most secure CPU ever made! /s

Yes it is both now. The host patch protects against vm-to-vm leaks, but you still need to protect your vm against application-to-application leaks. When I wrote the other comment it was at the time I did not have all the information we have

It depends on what you try to fix. VM - to - VM is host only. But now it seems it also needs to be applied to guests because of applications inside the guests which could abuse this as well.

I am pretty sure the patch needs to be applied on the host kernel and not the guest.

A lot of games only run single core. Though finally, more modern games do take advantage of more cores!

I think so too. It also seems the Linux version right now is in a "get it to work, optimize later" state.

Yes it will affect your VM as it's the host CPU that's affected.

If you look here: https://www.computerbase.de/2018-01/intel-cpu-pti-sicherheit... (Sorry it is German) But if you scroll down to "Windows-Benchmarks: Anwendungen" you can see that most applications do not ha

Ah okay. Thanks. I have been an Intel guy for all the years now, so I was used to getting new motherboards. Good to know AMD is doing that! Getting new motherboards is annoying.

Sadly I just bought an 8700k last week. Great CPU until next Tuesday? (Windows Patch Day) Though even if I lose some percentage, it will still outrun AMD on single core applications (and probably also multi core ones).

Why would the OS of the customer matter? The patch would be applied to the kernel of the hypervisor / host OS.

I am also quite annoyed because I paid premium (Intel) prices with the expectation to get premium speed. Now if I can just get the same performance cheaper with AMD, maybe I should just return the whole thing.

So I recently bought an 8700k. I was wondering if I should rather return it and get AMD instead? Not sure how much the recent bugs will impact me performance wise.

You need to somehow have access to the backup of your database (in my case KeePass) in case you lose it. If you put the password of the access itself in the manager you are in a deadlock. It is much easier to end up in a deadlock situation

Yes. There are some passwords that I have to remember since putting them into a password manager is not possible.

You can say no, because in the worst case you would "only" have to go back to Germany. But what about people who are from countries like Pakistan etc.? They would rather work on weekends than to have to go back.

This is exactly why I left the US after I graduated. Being on H1B is such a huge gamble these days. Now I am living in Europe, making good money, and living happily without having to worry about crap like this.

These days you don't even seem to need any evidence. An allegation seems to be enough to get you dethroned.
