I wonder about the companies that a VC rejects that end-up going under. How much is a firm's failure due to lack of funding vs. actual competitive forces or management inability. Not saying that I'd be a shinning beacon since I would have t

I never drink coffee (no tolerance for caffeine), and rarely drink tea. I usually drink water during the day. As for alcohol: wheat beer, port wine, and single-malt scotch.

MPI applications are usually written in C or Fortran, namely because the use case is number crunching. That's very different from what Clojure and Python are associated with. There aren't many scientific applications targeted to virtual mac

You could store the static (non-changing) text in a couple of C strings and then call writev() to communicate everything. That would save you the step of continuously reconstructing the header.

How I got accepted to grad school: I sent a typed letter as "priority mail" (where the recipient has to sign for it) to the prof I wanted to work with. It was my junior year and I told him I could meet him in-person during spring break. He

This recent discussion of angels vs. VCs is just like the debate of hedge funds vs. proprietary trading firms. What's happened in New York (and Chicago) is that they've gone after after completely different strategies. Hedge funds have a lo

I like the comments about dice. With one die, an outcome of 4 or 2 is equally likely. With two dice, an outcome of 4 is three times more likely than 2. So while one and two dice games are both random (as in unpredictable), only the one-die
