Funding rounds are usually preferred stock (though I hear Uber may have done some common stock in the last round, anyone know more?). Preferred stock gets paid out first, so the actual "valuation" here is less meaningful. Preferre

From the phys.org article linked to: """ If the laws really are reversible, then what are the physical origins of the time-asymmetric entropy production that we observe? The physicists explain that the answer to this question

Also credit to this guy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Heaviside ... Who took the original 20 equations and simplified them to the 4 we normally see.

I am kind of annoyed by these semi-sensationalized end-of-the-world type pieces. While antibiotic resistance is terrible, and people may die, common resistance to one polymyxin does not constitute the 'post-antibiotic era'.

Yes, that is tough to define. "Enabling" might be a better way of phrasing it. I wasn't a completely functioning adult at that age, in a lot of ways. I did not know college was an option, I just complained to my folks that I

I went to college early (14, graduated 18). I've spoken with a lot of similar folks over the years, and the biggest takeaway for me was that everyone's experience and needs were different. Some people were pushed by their parents,

+1 to index funds for saving, but you are already into a better off market when you look at optimizing savings. Debt is where most people fall down, and most folks in the US don't manage debt well. For example, there is a phenomena whe

In this 170 first SED prototype, the impressive salt removal and water recovery come with significant energy costs, in the range of 10−1 to 103 kWh/m3 171 (hydraulic pumping makes up about 0.5 kWh/m3 172 ) That is quite the ener

Oh yes, SF's lack of new capacity is the driving factor in rental pricing, no argument. Holistically, rent control, density restrictions, and poor public transit all combine to form the final price.

Yes, SF is a special kind of stupid. It still is about 70% rent control, if I remember correctly. So, even before construction capacity/permit issues, 100% of the people who want to move to SF are competing on price for 30% of the inve

2km/s means you are limited to about 20% payload. 20% is 10x better than a normal rocket, but there are actually easier ways to get 20%. The beamed power method gets about 20%, and works for humans (no g load). Escape Dynamics is tryin

Yep, very true. My notes, if you find them inspiring: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1tD8H8B4Umfmqf-8uOH2zoR72... I think the oil derrick idea was a bit crazy (why make the problem harder than it has to be?),

Surprisingly, I actually did a fair bit of research into this field. Both rail guns and light gas guns cap out at around 6km/s, and you really want 8km/s (more actually, for hypersonic drag loss) for this to be economical. Otherwi

Physically interfering with the delay/wipe mechanism should be possible. You only have to build the solution once. I can see that this makes it much harder up front, but eventually this too will get cracked.

Not really, it is mostly just more media coverage and observation bias. As an example, it used to be that you could just dump whatever you wanted into the local water table. Now everything is picked over with a fine comb.

I think OA is probably one of the scariest consequences of excessive CO2. We've already crossed a couple of thresholds. Oyster farming in the Puget Sound, for example, now often involves moving the larvae to Hawaii so they can form the
