I worked for about four years on Symbolics machines in the AI summer of the mid 80's. We were, perhaps, lucky in that I don't remember them breaking down at all, and our service guy was competent and entertaining. I remember when

Wow, no directories. That kind of blows my mind. I just really appreciate some kind of high-level "directory" (for lack of a better word) rather than trying to remember some random tag to help me find something. Reminds me (sorry,

Perhaps "useless" is the wrong term -- perhaps just "wildly inconsistent" would be better (which winds up being pretty much useless, if you can't find anything). nomel wrote: > I think structureless is not possi

A friend recommended I wear earplugs on plane flights, for a similar reason. He said that the constant noise stresses our bodies/minds, and lowering it makes the time more pleasant. It may entirely be placebo effect, but I find it very

There's an autonomous shuttle in testing near where I live (goes between a high-density living/shopping area an a metro station) which only goes about 10 mph. So not entirely vaporware...

Very cool! Just tried my bass into my iPhone 11 Pro max, recorded okay, but Tape It identified it as keyboards.

Anecdata, but a number of people in the online guitar group I'm in report that their iDevice can't really hear their bass guitar. My iPad Pro can, indeed, hear my bass fairly well, but I don't use it for recording the bass (l

This is truly impressive. The most impressive linguistic feat I've ever seen was on a Mastodon, which was named for the French writing group "Oulipo", whose members did work with constrained language. The work from this group

I have noticed it's late/early sometimes, but it appears to me to be mostly on time. Note: I'm not an expert by any means.

The book "Turtles, Termites, and Traffic Jams -- Explorations in massively parallel microworlds" [0] describes StarLogo, which was a massively parallel version of Logo. In it you could create, say, 1000 turtles in the center of th

Interesting! I just signed up for Chordify [0], which does extraction of chords from YouTube videos, and then plays them while you play along to either a grid of chords, or an animation showing the current chord and the next ones coming up.

There used to be a fantastic spades app on the Palm Pilot (!) which played pretty well, including fairly sensible partner play. There was a URL where you could get the source, but it was a dead URL, alas. Anyone know a good spades app for

I've been building a small personal app with PlanetScale and I like it a lot. Their way of doing schema branching works well, and is easy to use (though slightly tedious), and makes a lot of sense. Not affiliated with them in any way,

This. Friend of mine worked at a company that did COBOL to Java compilation, with the intent of producing "maintainable" code, and he reported (after several years of work) that this just wasn't possible (for them).

Oh yeah, I can definitely see doing a lot of small, not-necessarily-easy challenges as a way to improve. Even doing the same one, but in a different way ("now use an array instead of a linked list") would be good.
