This almost seems like a PG submarine [0] article. Especially now, it would benefit Google to be able to point to viable competitors. Maybe I am being too skeptical though. [0] http://www.paulgraham.com/submarine.html

There is a lot of nostalgia on HN regarding how great the web used to be before everything was commercialized. I came across this site today, and wanted to post it as a reminder that there are still great sites out there to discover that ar

Sorry, you're right I misread your comment. I was referring to the section about respecting the terms you want to be searched. I know Swisscows and Carrot2 both do some topic clustering, maybe those would be interesting as well.

Yes, Google is the source for organic web page results (similar to how DDG uses Bing). There are currently about 60 other sources for the vertical specific results.

Would have liked to seen the article list more of the specific towns. Just searched around and found this article [0], but only a few western towns were mentioned and most of the places listed are quite expensive. [0] https://ww

The one nice thing about GDELT is it translates non-english language news so that you can use an english search term and see articles in different language. It's not perfect (i.e. machine translation), but I am not aware of any other

I've used trigram matching of article title strings with some success for comparing similarity of news article. If the strings are greater than .6 they are probably about the same topic.

A cool feature update would be to map the multiple layers of related suggestions on a force-directed graph.

That's pretty good. For another option, you can also use the 'related:' on Runnaroo - https://www.runnaroo.com/search?term=related%3Achrome Results sourced from SaaSHub.

It's interesting that every site had directory/portal home pages until Google. Now most search engine mimics Google's minimal search home page with little more than a search bar. I wonder if things will ever come back around

Yeah, the MBFC site isn't as 'polished' as AllSides, but they have a lot more sites covered and overall I think their rankings are better (I know that is very subjective though).

A trick I use to identify the source of unknown search results is to compare the SERP to a search engine that I know uses the primary source (usually Bing or Google) indirectly. So for example, instead of comparing unknown results directly

Bing's biggest advantage might be its willingness to power other search engines. DDG, Qwant, Ecosia, Swisscows and about a dozen other alternative search engines [0] are all powered by Bing. The exceptions are Runnaroo (Google), Startp
