It'll get you Rails installed on your computer, but it doesn't resolve the limitation mentioned in the SO article. The Ruby community is just too coupled to Unix, any setup you have directly on Windows will incomplete.

One major reason not to install Rails directly onto Windows is because of all the gem incompatibilities you'll run into. JRuby would have the same problem. The problem is even worse when you're learning Rails because you'll see an awesome R

I totally agree but with the caveat that I don't blame anyone, including the judges. We chose to participate in a competition and they gave us their feedback on what we did -- nothing malicious, we just pitched the idea prematurely.

that's a really good point -- I was thinking myself how you'd consolidate this with being lean and I think you articulated the difference very well

Here's one overlooked reason why apps are better than websites: no passwords! I absolutely hate that every time I had to use the mobile GMail app I had to enter in a password again, even though everything else has a native app feel.

it's the same problem as allowing users to create millions of identities. if it gets to be a problem, you can just start removing unclaimed identities from oldest to newest.

That's a good point, I just thought the model of having the identity be separate from the login credentials made more sense. It has some nice benefits to separate them mentioned by ch below.
